PsychoBob 0 #9 February 28, 2006 In ATC we call it "wake turbulence". Depending on the weight/size of the aircraft we have to apply different separation standards between heavy, large and small aircraft and issue cautionary advisories i.e "Caution wake turbulence, departing B757". A Cessna 182 behind a Boeing 757 or a Heavy Boeing 747 or an Airbus can get flipped over very easily and it ain't pretty to watch."I'm not a gynecologist but I will take a look at it" RB #1295, Smokey Sister #1, HellFish #658, Dirty Sanchez #194, Muff Brothers #3834, POPS #9614, Orfun Foster-Parent?" Actually, slow and clean (no flaps) creates the strongest vortices. -- I love those pics.... I once saw a video of military tests on wingtip vortices where smoke-dyes were set off on the ground... a huge C-5 would fly over at various altitudes and they would measure the sizes of the vortices... just incredible... as you mentioned, you can clearly see in the video that when the C-5 goes by slow and w/ no flaps, the vortices are just frightening. Also, in other test videos, a lear jet would fly in the visible wing-tip vortices of a larger jet (kc-135 maybe, i don't recall)... in the video, you can see when the lear enters the vortice, it just gets flipped and tumbled like a little toy. Man! I miss Lee. And JP. And Chris. And...

PsychoBob 0 #12 February 28, 2006 QuoteI hear that the 757 wake turb is particularly nasty. Yeah when it came out it was under 300,000 lbs so it categorized as a large like the Boeing 727 or a MD88 which is was going to replace. To be listed as a heavy (B747) aircraft must be capable of 300,000 lbs so more it didn't fit the criteria and a lot of airports where the B757 was intended to be used do not allow heavy aircraft to operate on a routine basis. So Boeing did not want it listed as a heavy because it would stand to lose a lot of orders from the airlines. Well the wake turbulence it created was as bad as a heavy so they created a separate standard for the B757 so it is still listed as a large but with it's own set of rules."I'm not a gynecologist but I will take a look at it" RB #1295, Smokey Sister #1, HellFish #658, Dirty Sanchez #194, Muff Brothers #3834, POPS #9614, Orfun Foster-Parent?"
