Which rigs available with Skyhook?

Recommended Posts

I am seriously considering adding a Skyhook to my skydiving toys. I know I can't upgrade either of my Javelins...2000 and 2003. That said, who can make me one? I' ve tried getting on Sunpath and Mirage's site and get kicked off due to a java (wtf?) error so help a girl out.

I'll take a site I can access for RW, Sunpath or Mirage or some info.

The skyhook can only be on Vector 3's and Javelin Odyssey....I know older vector 3 can be retrofitted with a skyhook but I'm not sure if the same can be done to the Odyssey....you can't just add one to any rig because it involves adding a reserve flap and other alterations....it's no small task to outfit a rig with a skyhook.

First of all, while Skyhooks may be good, they are not the first fancy RSL. Main Assisted Reserve Deployment have been available on Sorcerer BASE rigs for atl least a decade. A similar MARD system has also been marketed by the French firm Advance/Basik Air Concept for several years.

To date, only recent Javelins and Vector III can be retrofitted with Skyhook.
During the 2007 PIA Symposium, Bill Booth announced that he had sold skyhook licenses to eight other companies. The licensees are required to do 30 drop tests and submit video footage oto booth before they can start production.

Aerodyne said that Skyhook might be available for ICON containers by mid-summer 2008.

Rigging Innovations is working on another fancy RSL system.

Velocity has also been testing an alternative RSL that vaguely resembles R.I.'s prototypes.

While Mirage Systems has tested a Skyhook, they have no plans to install Skyhooks in Mirage containers in the near future.

Sun Rise Rigging is also testing Skyhook, but is not making any promises about when they will be sold in Wings containers.

The rumor I heard is that Sun Rise is having issues due to their pop top / reserve flap / yoke design. But we all know how rumors are. :)

Would not surprise me.
Sun Path had to completely re-design the top flap on Skyhook-equipped Javelins. It took Sun Path two or three tries to get the new top flap right.

HUM....so maybe I need to wait a bit then see what my options are then.

I really didn't realize that so much went into adding a feature to an existing rig.

Any thoughts on trials of the skyhook as far as the rig is concerned? Do the mods hold up to several openings? Does the rig keep its shape? Does packing the skyhook into the rig change how it wears?

Rob, where do you get your information from? It's certainly not from anyone here.

Quoting from Eric Fradet's latest book. It includes a photo of a MARD prototype accredited to you and Jerry Baumchen.

"Le Manuel du Materielle" is only available in French.
I have a copy of this 600 page textbook for proof-reading. At 600 pages, it is a bit too long to use as a textbook for new riggers, but it is long enough to hold the attention of Master Riggers and rig designers. The 600 pages is well-illustrated with colour-photos and diagrams.
So far, so good. I have only found tiny errors in translation.
The only chapter that I disagree with is the supplemental instructions for closing Racer type reserves. Fradet uses antiquated steel T-bodkins, instead of modern (Cypres-compatible) ghost loops.

In conclusion, Eric Fradet's textbook compliments books by Poynter and Reid by going into more detail. It is a fascinating read for riggers.

So then what is going on at Velocity regarding Skyhook/MARDs? Anything?

Nothing more than brainstorming at this point. We are quite busy dealing with our orders and repairs right now. I haven't signed the Skyhook license agreement since that would prevent us from exploring other options that may be more reliable and economical.

Rob, I've sent Eric an email asking him to edit that section of his book, and would appreciate it if you could give us a call if you want to know any juicy gossip related to VSE:P
