popsjumper 2 #26 March 2, 2006 my Dad didn't know one end of screwdriver from the other...in 1943, the Army made him a B-17 engine mechanic. True. My reality and yours are quite different. PLFXpert 0 #28 March 2, 2006 My "friends" uncle is a rich engineer. And his tool box is smaller than my smallest shoe box <---has two big, heavy, red, metal tool boxes in the garage...not to mention the sanders, the saws.... I love making things....unfortunately I rarely have time My father was a super-man-amazing-jack-of-all-trades. He never slept and did home-improvement all weekends. Me? I require 8 hours sleep and weekends are for FUN-ONLY (maybe a few errands)! So, I have to cram everything into Monday-Friday before bedtimePaint me in a corner, but my color comes back. happythoughts 0 #33 March 3, 2006 For my last house, most of it was custom. I was able to get some cherry wood for the stairs. Stairs are a special craft beyond just carpentry. I had a person do them. Anyway, I used poly-urethane (or however you spell it) to protect them. It had two values. One, it was very durable and second, the reflection was incredible. I put a light over the landing at the bottom. It reflected all the way up. You have to float it on and it takes a lot of time, but if you are worried about scuffs and dings, it is worth the effort long-term. The pics look great.
