sundevil777 102 #2 March 3, 2006 It is a lot easier now than when I did it as a kid in the early 70's. Back then you could only get kits where you had to glue the fins on. It was more 'rewarding', but a lot of work and the fins broke a lot. Now many kits have plastic injected bases with integral fins. The starter kits are amazingly cheap with complete launchers and everything. I used to put insects in the rockets with the clear nose cones, they never were hurt. I also tried to get them to catch fire when the parachute ejection charge would fire, but was unsuccessful. When the rockets were broken, at times we would just light off the engines by themselves, which of course meant they were unguided, unstable missiles - very exciting. It is cheap entertainment, try it out.People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. skydiverbry 0 #4 March 3, 2006 Goin give it a try. But did'nt know if I should start at level1,seems too simple or if I would be OK at level2. Tink1717 2 #5 March 3, 2006 I used to do that when I was a kid. I don't know what, if anything, it has evolved into. If you are healing, the time of building the rocket seems like a good way to kill time.Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. They ring the bell and runaway... councilman24 37 #11 March 3, 2006 Somewhere I saw internet stuff about grown up rockets. Liquid fueled, thousands of feet. Seems like there was an altitude or fuel load limit. google liquid hobby rockets and found this "The high-end of the hobby had grown even larger, now including liquid hybrid fuel rockets. Electronics and microprocessors also made an impact. It was now possible to make accurate altitude and other flight-characteristic measurements. Payloads included cameras, telemetry, and even GPS (global positioning system) systems." Hmmmm unless your talking about this level 1: "In order to qualify to purchase and use engines of power classes from H to I, you must obtain a Level 1 certification, for which you are required to: make a safe and successful flight of a rocket using an engine in that power class. . which is witnessed by two other adult NAR members (at least one of whom is certified to the desired level); have your witnesses sign a standard certification affidavit, available from NAR Headquarters or from our Filing Cabinet page); return the signed form to NAR HQ .and your name will be added to our list of qualified high power consumers for that engine class." fromhttp://nar.org/hpcert/index.htmlI'm old for my age. sundevil777 102 #18 March 3, 2006 QuoteTaping a bunch of engines to a big plastic car and shooting it down the road is also quite entertaining. Yup, I did that too, only one engine though. I also would put about a cup of smokeless powder (reloading powder for rifle shells) in a glass coke bottle, and throw a match in. That would put a flame up about 5 feet high, and sound like a rocket. I'm sure glad my dad never found out about that. It does pretty good even to just put it in a big pile on the open ground too.People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Fer real! I saw them in We-Screw-Em-All-Mart. ($ to MXC) Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money. Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them? It went so high you couldn't see it, and came back down only about 100 feet away, without our seeing it, impaled itself in the dirt. turtlespeed 226 #21 March 3, 2006 I guess they don't make the one that was my favorite - I modified it for E engines(Basically glued everything up real good) - it was called the Mean Machine - 6' tall and 2" in Diam. went 500 feet or so - The V-2 I still have and fly occaisonally is powered by E - but doesn't go nearly as high.I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
SkymonkeyONE 4 #22 March 3, 2006 When I was a kid we used to go up to Lake Estes, Colorado in the winter and ice skate and watch rednecks on snowmobiles race around. The Estes rocket plant was right next to the lake, on the "uphill" side.
