CanuckInUSA 0 #1 March 6, 2006 I've managed to get through much of my life without major back pain, but I hurt my lower back this afternoon on the 2nd shift of a playoff hockey game (of course we dumb hockey players just play through pain as I didn't miss a shift). I believe it's only a muscle problem and not anything wrong with my spine (I wasn't hit or anything like that on the shift where I hurt myself). At times I'm in a lot of pain (it's a dull pain and it's also radiated down to ... I hate to say it ... my boys) and at times the pain isn't that bad (usually this is after I've stood up for a bit of relief). I suspect tonight is going to be a long mainly sleepless night as I beginning hating life (being hurt sucks). I'm hoping that I'll be able to sleep, plus I'm also hoping that this pain is a short term thing as game two of our playoff series is Tuesday night. But time will tell. I was able to play through the pain during the game, but I'm not so sure if I'd be all that mobile now that the injury has had a few hours to develop. I took some Aleve once I got home, but I remember someone telling me last year not to over do taking over the counter drugs such as Aleve as they can be very hard on the liver (or was that the Kidneys? I can't remember). So now I'm back from the store with some Ibuprophen. So what's your favorite over the counter drugs for muscle back pain? Being hurt sucks!!! But what's done is done. Beverly 1 #2 March 6, 2006 try lay off the pain numbing drugs. Make an appointment with a physio instead. Taking the drugs tells us freaks that we are ok to carry on as usual and we tend to do more damage 'cause we think we are fine. Rather get it sorted. And start stretching. You can laugh, but yoga/pilates etc is fantastic for skydiving and harsh sports! Give it a try, you will be amazed at the centre core strength you get along with the stronger muscles. Broke 0 #3 March 6, 2006 Tylenol or Acetometafin(sp?) is metabolizes in the liver Motrin or Ibuprofin is metabolized in the kidneys I am not sure about Aleave Bascially try not to take too many pain relievers, as it will over time lower your pain threshold. Cronic users of pain relievers actually get pain from normal stimuli when they stop taking those pain relievers. Some things you can do to help your back. Strengthen your Abdominal muscles so they can take some of the weight off your spinal colum. Also most importantly go see a doctor. You have only one back. skybytch 273 #4 March 6, 2006 Aleve, ibuprofen... whichever you take, take them with food to reduce the damage they do to your stomach. Any form of muscle relaxant could be helpful. Ice packs and a heating pad are also your friends - but being a hockey player I'd assume you already know that. My back pain is usually made worse by ice and better with heat but yours may be different. I've had people suggest alternating ice and heat, 20 minutes at a time but I haven't tried it... CanuckInUSA 0 #5 March 6, 2006 Yes I need to do some more stretching (maybe not tonight but tomorrow for sure), but I think I might have started all this pain by stretching my back too early before my body was properly warmed up. While I was waiting for the Zambonie to finish cleaning the ice I was doing a few stretches on my back. I knew not to stetch my leg muscles before I skated around a bit, but for some reason I went ahead and stretched the back, the rink was cold and it's pretty damp here where I live. So I do think I did this to myself. Also, yes you're right that I shouldn't rush back into things before I'm properly healed. But it's playoff time and we crazy/stupid hockey players have been know to play with pain. We'll see how I feel tomorrow and of course Tuesday will be the go no-go decision day. I'm guessing my side is my best choice and I will put a pillow between the legs. Oh and I did eat a small meal so I currently don't have an empty stomach with my over the counter drugs. Best to take a hot shower or do light exercises (i.e. walking) for 5 minutes before doing serious stretches. Ice is the best short term cure for pain. Pills only work for a couple of weeks after that. But sooner or later you have to visit a doctor. "Real doctors" sometimes grudgingly admit that chiropractors are better at treating spinal injuries. I had injured my back in a car accident a few months ago and have recently started going to Shiatsu Therapy, although the therapy itself hurts like hell, it has really really helped. But it's likely not as serious as I either initially made some of you think it is or as serious as some of you think it is. There is pain, but remember that I did finish the game and was able to play at full speed (albeit ignoring the pain). Time will tell as to how this back pain is tomorrow and more importantly on Tuesday morning (my go no go decision day for the next playoff game). Of course I want to play knowing that I'm a valuable experienced resource to the team. But I won't be good for anyone (including myself) if I can't play at full speed and rush back and miss more games. So time will tell. I am in pain, but it's not like I can't move. Ice for the first 24 hours will help minimize swelling. After that it is pretty useless. 2. A heating pad works better that ice...but it dehydrates the muscles. Moist heat is only way to go. a hot tub or a hot bath is ideal. I've also used a towel soaked it hot water. When the towel cools down, dip it in hot water again. I dip my towel every 5 minutes to keep it hot. After 15 minutes of moist heat, I stretch my back and hip flexors. 3. When your lower back is messed up your hamstrings compensate for it. When I started to stretch my hamstrings I noticed a difference the next day. I also notice an increase in back pain when i forget to stretch my hamstrings in the morning. 4. spend the money on a good 20 minute massage. Have them split the time between you lower back and your hamstrings. Drink a lot of water after the massage. I was mearly putting out some information that I read about in several studies by overutilizing OTC products we lower our threshold for pain. Also if you need to constantly use OTC products you should see a doctor.
