Strange pet behavior

Recommended Posts

I have two cats. The male cat (Sonny) keeps putting cat toys or string or a rubber band into the water dish.

and sometimes he will deliberately knock the dish over & spill the water.

I don't know why, & he ain't talkin.

i was hoping this was a thread about strange pets. like ocelots, kinkajous, or even marmosets. as far as your cat goes, until he/she learns to use matches nothing is strange, and unless this is your first day with it i'm surprised you haven't caught on by now.

pulling is cool. keep it in the skin

My dog does strange things... lately she goes and hides everytime I start to fill her food bowl.

She is trying to tell you that dog food sucks :D

I haven't changed her dog food... and she does eat it... just not like any normal dog. :S:D

She also runs around puddles when its raining... she'll go out of her way to do it... but she just loves the water... :D:D

Doesnt mean she likes it..she is probably thinking "Awe man this shit again" :S

Every once in awhile I will add steamed rice and a bit of hot water to the dog food...making a bit of gravy with the water in the dog food. My two go apeshit over it. But the day after I do that I put the plain dog food down they look at me like WTF is this crap..where is what you gave us yesterday...:D

When I do the rice thing is the only time they actually inhale the dog food, otherwise they are munchers..just eat little here and a little there. I could actually leave multiple days of dog food down and they wouldnt eat it all at once. :)

I think part of the reason she scarfed it down for a while was because her cousin (no real relation other then it's my brothers dog...) was here for a few weeks earlier this year and she knew she had to eat otherwise Casey would get it and she would go hungry.

Now there's a dog with an appetite... if you aren't careful she'll take you're fingers with treats... :D

I'm not too conserned as she isn't underweight at all...

I am very lucky that neither of my dogs are like that. On occasion my husky might try and snag some of the shiba's food. But in general they are both well behaved with that, and with not stealing food off the table etc. they dont get people food unless it is mixed with the dog food, and that is very rairly and limited to normally just rice if I do it.

Sonny knocks the bowl over because moving water is interesting. He'd probably also enjoy watching water run into the sink or tub.

The putting of toys in the water bowl is for a different reason:

http://www.hdw-inc.com/behaviorswhy.htm

DUNKING FAVORITE TOYS IN FOOD OR WATER BOWL

Has your cat ever dropped his favorite catnip mouse or rubber fetching ball in his water bowl? Or, have you gone to re-fill his food bowl, only to find a special toy of his right in the middle? It just might be that your cat is trying to find a "safe" place for his favorite things. It often happens that the toy that ends up in the water or food bowl is often a toy that has recently been enjoyed by your cat, or even by your cat with you. In the wild, cats often take their prey back to their "nest" area, and hide it from predators. Indoor cats don't really have a "nest" per se, so they often consider their food and water dishes as the "safest" areas within their "territory".

Casey wouldn't steal food (off the table or anything) but generally speaking she's much more treat motivated then Karma is... and I wouldn't leave Karma's food down for Casey to get the chance to steal it.

I'm not sure this is the reason. Sonny will go & find things he doesn't care about & put them in the water. A rubber band, string, whatever. he's just weird.

he also likes to lick people when they come out of the shower.:S

My male cat will play with his toys (rubber bands, guitar strings) and then drop them into his food bowl before he starts eating. I think it has something to do with his kitty instinct to play with his food before he eats it. He's a manly boy...

I could spend all day setting up little stacks of coins just to watch my cat reach out a paw and knock them over. She finds this irresistible and it really makes me laugh.

And when she was a kitten she used to retrieve rubber bands that I'd flick across the room and bring them back, just like a dog.

She's also addicted to being chased - she'll sit halfway up the stairs, or outside the bathroom door, and won't stop miaowing until you give up and come towards her - then she dashes off.

Who knows what goes on in their heads, but it sure is funny. :)
