ACMESkydiver 0 #1 March 7, 2006 I am at a loss. Friday my beautiful angel brings home a flyer for 'Buzzsaw' wrestling club. She tells me she wants to do it, but was afraid that I would 'freak out' if she told me. Freak out? Because my little girl wants to compete in a boy's world? Naw, I'd never understand anything like that.... I'm shocked. She knows her mama was in the army, is a pilot, is a skydiver, lifts weights, and played baseball with boys as a kid...and she's worried about being a tomboy... I'm not worried about my little Sprout being a tomboy...but I really don't know much about kids' wrestling...tonight is her first practice, and I'm not sure what I am supposed to dress her in. We don't have time to buy one of those unitard thingy's or wrestling shoes... Any help? ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. wildcard451 0 #2 March 7, 2006 Find a real wrestling club. Anyone who puts "buzzsaw" on their wrestling club name is a fucking tool and is prolly more about the sensational aspects and trying to be trendy and cool than actual wrestling.
AggieDave 6 #3 March 7, 2006 Is it real wrestling or a backyard wrestling crew? There is a major difference. Personally I'd see if she wants to learn martial arts, then go to a handful of schools and find the style she likes. There are a lot of Judo variants that she would probably like, since there's a lot of grappling.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." Seriously though - unless the club/activity has "Boy or Boys" in it - let her go play -I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
funks 1 #5 March 7, 2006 Only fight I got into in high school was with someone who turned out to be ranked #3 in the state in wrestling. He kicked my ass in front of the entire school. I showed him though, I went to the next wrestling event and Boo'ed really loud when he was competing!!
WatchYourStep 0 #6 March 7, 2006 I wrestled through in kids clubs and in high school. I've been an official ever since I graduated. Wrestling is an awesome sport and people can learn a lot about themselves from it. I see a lot more female wrestlers now days then I use to. Some of them are very good, the state champion in Alaska. Feel free to drop me a PM I can give you suggestions or any information you may have. PS: I had to wrestle a girl in high school. It was a little weird, but that's probably because I was only 14 and hadn't ever been that close to another girl "You start off your skydiving career with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. livendive 8 #15 March 7, 2006 I started wrestling in 4th grade, with boy's club, and then also with my school teams from 9th thru 12th. I had one girl friend who wrestled one year on her high school's team (boys), she did ok. Do a google search for Whitney Conder. She wrestled with the boys at Puyallup (a school I attended that takes wrestling serious), and placed in the top 8 in the state for her weight class last year and this year. There were two girls in the 4A championship tournament this year. Washington also now has a sanctioned girls wrestling league and championship tournament that shares venue with the boys tournament (Mat Classic). Here's a brief article. One thing though, if she does follow through and take a serious interest. Keep close tabs on her weight management. As an adult looking back, the pressure in wrestling to make weight is a bit extreme and not very healthy. Combined with societal pressures on girls, girl's natural tendency to carry a bit more body fat, and, umm, feminine issues, I can see where it'd be even more troubling to me as a parent of a daughter. For perspective, I usually ran around 4% body fat during wrestling season (65 pounds less than my current weight), and I once had to drop almost 10% of my body weight (from 148.5 to 135) in like 4 days to fill an open weight class at a tournament. Granted a bunch of the weight was "filler" I was carrying to enable to me wrestle three classes above my norm in our previous tournament, but still, that kind of weight loss just ain't healthy. WatchYourStep 0 #19 March 7, 2006 While all this does still happen it's not near as bad as it used to be. The NFHA now allows a "growth allowance" after a certain date which gives the wrestlers a few extra pounds after the certification date. They've also started several programs to make sure kids aren't cutting as hard as in the past. Again it still happens but it's a lot better. We were only allowed to wrestle up one class, so one time I had to get above 148 to wrestle in 168, and next tourney wrestled in 135. That sucked! I did everything you mentioned somewhat regularly (except diuretics), plus ate ex-lax a couple times for any last bits of lettuce that might be in my gut. Funny story - We had one guy go the ex-lax route once a little too close to match time. He developed a major problem right in the middle of his match. Wrestling is $50 for the year, which includes insurance. She is also in track right now, and she still ice skates, but not in competitions. The 'type' of wrestling is 'freestyle / greco'. I don't know what those mean, but I guess I'll find out tonight. ~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action.
