I get confused about the rules - too many subjective opinions. Better to remain part of the silent majority than attempt any real discussion for fear of treading over the ever shifting lines.

Amen to that. Even the fact that the shifting sands of the rules here are essentially advertised as such does little to ease the frustrations of those impaled upon the whim of the mods.

I'll bet I remember what it was. ;) A heated debate by people who were supposed to leave the volume to others?:)

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

so where's the shrine of john rich and whatsit all about? can't get no connection [:/]

Which raises an interesting question.

Does the average person hover over links and check the status bar to see where they might be headed? or is blind clicking more the norm?

Is that a general rule, or does it only go into effect if the person whose avatar is being used objects?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nope, it's not a general rule. It's a moderator judgement call.

I've asked Alex to change his avatar, because I think it creates confusion in our community, and I believe that one of the fundamental principles of this community (and almost any on-line community) is that people should have consistent identities.

Note the use of the word "asked" in the above sentence. I'd prefer that we work at that level.

Just out of sheer curiosity, did the other posters using 'confusing' avatars of another person get asked as well?

From what I understand, since the effects of the ether still linger, it was less of an impaling and more of a pinprick. :P

Mr. Crowley:

I notice that you have hijacked my personal photo for your own message here. You have no right to the use of my image, and I do not want my image associated with your messages. This is unethical, deceitful, and just plain stupid. Please cease the use of my photo immediately, and do not do this again.

An apology from you is in order.

[thread hijack]John! :o:o:o

I never thought i'd ever agree with you, on anything, but in this case, I do!

Wow, that's a purdy avatar.

TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

Thank you, LM, no thread is complete w/ a "Thread deleted by Lisamariewillbe"

Now we can all go about our business w/ a sense of tranquility.

But you have to admit that it does give us some closure in the other place. Perusing two sites in search of cryptographic clues to online conversations can be tedious.

I'd like to see you litigate that. All these folks who use the images of public figures, as well as of their friends, are going to be SOL if you win.

It's not about litigation, it's about Alex taking responsibility for his actions and doing what is right. I am not a public figure.

I take my integrity seriously, and people associate that image with me and what I write. I don't want my integrity compromised by AlexCrowley hijacking my image and fooling people into thinking that I'm the author of the inane things that he says.

A private individual ought to have exclusive rights over their own image. Period.

If Alex doesn't remove it from his profile, I'll be forced to remove it as my own thumbnail photo and just leave a blank white void there. This would set a bad precedent for the forum... Readers like to have a face to associate with a writer. If someone is going to compromise that system, it makes the forum more impersonal, and then we all lose.

I hate to say this, but anyone not able to read the NAME AlexCrowley on a post in these forums, regardless of the picture associated with it, has got bigger problems than merely contributing to some perceived notion of character deconstruction.
