New Work Boots

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else hate breaking in new work boots?

I go through at least 2 pair a year and I find the break in period horrible:(...I am not talking cheap boots either!!....I spend 13 hour shifts on concrete running around like a mad man in them so I do not scrimp on quality...my last pair was over $200 CAD and took over 2 months to break in[:/]

Its almost like the steel shank has to form to your foot before they become comphy....

So low and behold ....I see boots on sale with a composite toe and shank...has anyone tried these new non-steel work boots?....Do you like them? etc?...they seem nice and light as I do the initial break in but only time will tell if they are worth the $$

comments?

I had to wear steel toes for years. The best I found were Wolverine Durashocks. Normally around $150 US, but could be found for $110 on sale a Sears. They were comfy from the first day I put them on. No need to break them in. I haven't tried the composite toe boots.

I've been asking the same question about the leather fire boots I've been issued with my fire department and rescue squad (separate organizations, two pairs of identical boots). Everyone is saying I'm stuck just breaking them in the old fashioned way: by wearing them.

The first time in them was a five hour structure fire about two weeks ago. I was crippled for DAYS afterword from the blisters on the backs of my heels... I'm just now getting back to normal.

I'm just going to try to wear them a little bit at a time whem I'm hanging around the station waiting on a call.

I use low rise Red Wings Linesman boots for cable. They are a bitch to break in, but now they are a part of my feet and they can be resoled. Most the cable guys get 3-5 years out of Redwings with a couple resolings and 1 year out of Carolinas - then trash them...

Ouch....IMHO if your getting blisters it usually means that the boots dont fit you well...allowing too much movement....can you get another pair to try?

Personally even though I have small feet(no comments girls) I have bought them bigger in the past than I should have to get the proper width ...even tripple E's are tight width wise and I usually end up blowing out the stitching on the side of the boot just after they become comphy [:/]...have you gone to a larger size then necessary to make up for lack of width fit?

One trick I found useful - though I never wore boots professionally - was to put a 1sq inch piece of fabric plaster (eg Elastoplast) on my heel when breaking in new boots. Stopped blisters appearing and the skin getting worn off, and made life so much more tolerable.

3 to 5 years ..another WOW

I,ve thought of Red Wings but havent seen them here in Nova Scotia.

Being a mechanic the leather and stiching would never last more than a year...to many chemicals(oil/trans/brake/floor cleaner/etc) get onto em to expect too much out of them....

I just want a pair that wont have me in agony for a month or two while breaking them in :S

Nah, the crotchless pantyhose with a slim, leather mini-skirt works much better. ;)

I've gone from RedWings to Georga Boots. All depends. Take your time trying them all on. Regardless breaking in boots sucks. My last Red Wings I poured a quart of liquid mink oil in in em, let em set for a month. Perfect except for brown socks til I retired em. And trust me. We were wearing pedometers on the last job and the bosses were clocking 10 plus miles a day[:/]

Poured mink oil into them....yikes!

Man people run away now when I take off my boots.....I cant even imagine the stench there would be if it combined with liquid essence of mink:|

Scary very scary:o

On the pedometer note...I must try that one day...would be quite interesting.

I've had red wings, and a variety of other boots. The wolverines were great boots, until I found Rockys. I paid $140.00 for a pair at a western store and walked over five miles the first day without getting one blister. I'll never buy anything else if I can help it.

In the service, we use to wear our new boots in the shower, or swim with them on. It's hell on your feet for a couple of days, and they fit perfectly.

Another brand...were they "work boots" steel toe and shank..or a equivlent structure such as a composite?

Common people I am not talking pretty shoes(sorry ladies) or non plated boots(sorry ladies:P)...I am talking real WORK boots...steel toe and shank or the latest and greatest thing in replacing the steel with other suitable components....
