hooked 0 #1 March 3, 2006 The Iditarod race starts on Saturday. Wish my sister luck, she's one of the mushers and I'm hoping she finishes with good placement! They raised and trained all the dogs on her team. J -------------------------------------- Sometimes we're just being Humans.....But we're always Human Beings. warpedskydiver 0 #3 March 3, 2006 This news just in: (BP) wire Bryant Gumble has made a formal complaint about the dogs used in the race... He wants only wild african dogs used in dogsledding, as they are the best dogs at everything. They come from africa so they will be perfectly suited to the race. He further claims that the Huskies and Malamutes used currently are inferior, and don't have enough "Gangsta" style and street rep!

steveorino 7 #5 March 3, 2006 I lived in Alaska for seven years. My two favorite things (besides skiing) was watching the Fur Rendevous races and the Iditarod. Libby Riddles, the first woman to win the Iditarod, was a customer of mine. She was a cool lady -- very laid back and outdoorsy. You didn't hear much from her after she won. One of the reasons is I think she didn't like the publicity. Susan Butcher on the other hand, ate it up. Poor old Rick Swensen, he was the greatest musher in Alaska until these ladies came and stole his thunder. steveOrino
SkydiveStMarys 0 #6 March 3, 2006 What kind of work did you do while you live in Alaska, Steve? I would love to take a vacation there..its absolutely beautiful from the pics I have seen and I have had other friends visit there and from what I hear and saw from their video it is wonderful. sleddog 0 #7 March 3, 2006 I've been to the Iditirod twice, as a volunteer worker. I have so much admiration for the Mushers & their dogs, it is truly a Great Race. Tell us who she is, so we can follow her. Good Luck Jack

SkymonkeyONE 4 #10 March 3, 2006 I may be confused on his placing, but I know there is an MFF instructor who worked at Yuma around 2000-2002 who took leave and finished 2nd one of those years. Can't remember his name either, but it was a pretty big deal in military circles at the time. Chuck
steveorino 7 #11 March 3, 2006 QuoteWhat kind of work did you do while you live in Alaska, Steve? Bobbi It truly is a beautiful place. Being from Texas, I found it a little too cold for me. The warmest it ever was in Anchorage in the seven years I was there was 76 degrees. The winters in Anchorage are not bad. Anchorage is much like Seattle (where I lived also) The scenery is absolutely stunning! World class skiing is 40 minutes from Anchorage. If you love to fish (I don't) and hunt (it's okay if you can eat what you shoot) it is a sportsman 's paradise. I did enjoy running (Mayor's Midnight Sun Marathon), skiing, hiking, and camping. I missed scubadiving (way too cold for me-- give me Cozumel any day!) skydiving (yes, I know they jump there -- but a very short season), and college and professional football. Hockey is king! (200 people showed up at a state football championship and 2000 people would show up for a typical HS hockey match between Service HS and Dimond HS). steveOrino
hisgoofyness 0 #12 March 3, 2006 I lived in Anchorage for 4 years stationed at Elmendorf AFB. I miss the scenery. Absolutely beautiful there! From driving through Denali State Park, to the ride to Girdwood (Alyeska) almost every weekend in the winter. Oh, and the northern lights... Damn, I need to go back for a visit... I keep telling myself I am going to the Summer Solstice Boogie, one of these years!!! Two memories that will always stick with me: 1) Carrying a 12 pack of beer and a lounge chair to the roof of our dorm. Set the beer down in the snow, kick back in the lounger, and watch the northern lights. 2) Driving in to downtown Anchorage, from the base, and seeing all the "Combat Fishermen" beside the C street bridge. Those guys get serious about it...
hooked 0 #13 March 3, 2006 Her name is Lori Townsend. She is race contestant #1. steveorino 7 #14 March 3, 2006 Fav memories. Climbing Flat Top Mountain in about 45 minutes with some youth and sledding down the snow chutes to the bottom in about 3-5 minutes. Startling Moose when I'd run on the bike trails late at night. It would scare the bejesus out of both of us. climbing some mt and fining fish fossels in the shale on the summit. 100s of bald eagles near Homer (or was it Seward??) Watching the Fur Rendevous dog sled races near my home. steveOrino

steveorino 7 #16 March 3, 2006 Fur Rendevous was the festival (Spring is near) sort of like Mardi Gra with less beads and boobs ... more fur. I would make fur hats (fox, wolf and lynx) and sell them to the cheechackos for $300+ dollars. I'd make $1000 - 1500 in a week. steveOrino

DanDruff 0 #18 March 5, 2006 Ill be looking out for your sisters arrival in Nome. I am working there right now, and the iditarod is the talk of the town. This will be the 1st time I get to see them finish the race, from what I hear things are gonna get a little out of hand as the population of nome almost doubles and the bars stay open all night. hooked 0 #21 March 7, 2006 Thanks for the offer, but she's been scratched from the race! I so wanted her to at least be able to finish. I haven't heard from her, so I have no idea what went wrong. unlucky1 0 #22 March 8, 2006 I live in Alaska now....I originally came up for a 2yr contract with the hospital. After my first 2 months here, I decided to stay at least 5 or 6 years. After my first year and a half (now), I'm thinking more along the lines of 10 years or so. I was at the start of the Iditarod and I believe i took pics of your sister, if indeed she was the first musher out of the gate. We got great "seats" at the very start line for the second year in a row. If I get a chance, I'll look and see if I have her pic. Ok? Blue Skies, John
hooked 0 #23 March 8, 2006 If you got pictures of her, I would love to see them. According to log ins, and start info, and bib number, she had to be the first one to start. Please could you send me the pics (post them here or email or pm them to me) if they are her, bib #2. How exciting it would have been to see the start of this race, and to see the finish. unlucky1 0 #24 March 8, 2006 send me your private email. I have one of her with her lead dogs...can't really see her face, but as her sister, you should know who it is. I only have one or two. Did she run in last year's race. If so, I'm SURE I have pics of her.
