murrays 0 #1 March 4, 2006 So, my boss was recently given an IBM X41 tablet pc for being the board member of a company. This machine doesn't have an optical drive builtin. We have a small peer to peer network around a central router and hub consisting of three Macs and 2 pcs. Our printers...one HP 2200 Laserjet and a Xerox 8400 color printer...are set up to use IP addresses. Today I tried to set up the Laserjet on the X41..I downloaded the PCL 6 driver and installed it. Then I tried to add a printer...and got nowhere. (This is my first experience with Windows XP..the other PCs we use have 98 and ME on them) The tablet couldn't find the printer attached to the network. I tried typing in IP addresses....using all the addresses that are used by the router for our little network. Nothing worked. What's the trick? Is there a way to select the HP 2200 from a list of printers like you used to be able to do? If you just have the driver you'll probably need to do this: Click Start button/settings/printer & faxes click add printer click next leave local printer selected clear 'auto. detect' checkbox click next select create a new port from that drop-down box select standard tcp/ip port click next enter the ip address of the printer take the default port name, like ip_10.10.10.0 (or whatever the printer ip # is) click next it'll then go find your printer, now follow the prompts (I'm out of dialogs I can continue with, but hopefully you can follow the prompts now) then when done with the port, add the printer (with the driver) to it and you should be done or close to it You can have it good, fast, or cheap: pick two. RevJim 0 #4 March 4, 2006 It's just sooooo much easier in XP to hook the computer up to workstation/pc running XP and just turn on the printer sharing. Very easy detection and installation, and security shouldn't be a problem as long as it's kept within your corporate firewall, which I'm assuming you have.It's your life, live it! So, I gave up. I've wasted enough time to no avail. We called the IT guy at the company that supplied the tablet and left a message asking for a docking station with an optical drive or instructions on how to set up our printers. I really can't believe that it has to be that difficult.
