On volunteering...

Recommended Posts

If you have any time at all, you should.

A while back I saw that there was a vacancy on the Police Commission in my town and realized I had no good reason not to volunteer. I actually have a ton of experience in crime prevention and police science, so I couldn't rationalize not volunteering. I interviewed with the Mayor and the Chief not caring if they wanted what I had to offer. It wasn't a job, after all. I got appointed and now about once a week I conduct neighborhood watch meetings with folks that live nearby.

Tonight I had a great meeting with a very colorful bunch of neighbors. It was really heartening. With all the pushed news about how bad things are, and with movies like "Crash" out there, who would think that 11 diverse families would crowd into one of the neighbors living rooms to listen to how they could better cooperate to create a safer environment for the adults and children that lived on that court.

Great stuff. A beacon of positivity in an ocean of pessimism.

Log on to your city and county's commissions page and see what commissions have vacancies. No, you may not make a difference, but it is fun and heart warming.

That is all.

Commissioner Kelly

Volunteering is wonderful. I am a volunteer director with hospice in my area as my job, but also do 4-8 hours a week at the humane society in my town walking/working with the dogs and acting as an adoption person. Really rewarding and it wasn't hard to find the time!

I know what you mean. I have Type O blood and they're always in dyer need of it since it's universal. I can't stand the process of donating, etc., but I always do b/c I just can't rationalize why I shouldn't.

I admit, lately I've volunteered my finances far more than my time. But, in general, I've been volunteering for a long time. In high school I tutuored learning-disabled elementary schoolers, volunteered at the Boys & Girls club, and through college volunteered for various animals shelters/causes.

This was a nice reminder that it's been too long since I've given my time, though.

Thank you:P

I've been volunteering as a crew leader with Habitat for Humanity for over 10 years. Being able to leverage my construction knowledge by teaching/leading all the energetic volunteers to help a family in need is fulfilling. Seeing how having a simple decent place to live makes so many positive changes in the family, especially the children, is habit forming. The regular volunteers even have a name for it, "Infectious Habititous." I've been very lucky that when I needed a hand, it was there. I like to think working with HfH is a good way to make a deposit to the karma bank.
50 donations so far. Give it a try.

Well, unfortunately I can't be everywhere I want to be.

I donated a big chunk recently to stopping the seal clubbing---the same cause Paul McCartney and family have been pursuing vigorously lately. It's been going on for a while. I've donated before, signed numerous petitions & written letters. Obviously, it hasn't done much[:/]

If I could, I would be up there in a second practicing the "eye for an eye" on any bastard clubbing a sealB|

Every time I volunteered to do a favor for an Air Force NCO, they lied to me about the contents of the package - that I was delivering - they lied to me about which officer I was supposed to deliver it to, then they lied to me about compensatory time off.
Then they acted surprised when I volunteered to become a civilian.

Yes indeed. Being a Big Brother/Big Sister doesn't take much time out of your life and can be very rewarding while making a difference for the better in someone else's life.

Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
