My dad's lady friend moved here a little over a year ago from California, where she'd lived in the same house since 1957. Same friends for many of those years, but her health got to where living closer to relatives (no children) sounded like a better idea.

Tonight she got a tape of Christmas celebrations and best wishes from her next door neighbor in California. A tour of the house (decorated as always), her children and grandchildren all saying hello and "we miss you" or "Christmas just isn't the same this year," some close friends, and some video of the house that she sold when she moved -- it's been painted, and it has a new garage door.

If you've ever wondered about the effect of such a video, it's powerful -- worth all the time it took to make. She was utterly touched and bowled over.

So even if it sounds kind of lame, make one, and send it to someone you love who is far away. Soldier, friend, neighbor, parent, grandparent. I was absolutely touched. So next I'll get my camera and make sure her apartment here (and my dad) is well-documented for her next letter back to California.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

My dad took all these movies with an old 8mm camera he had... the first video dates back to when my oldest brother was a baby (1963)....the movies he took were all the way through part of my childhood...he had those movies transferred over to a dvd for Christmas...watching all those movies and seeing the memories that I've only HEARD about up until seeing them in front of me...the feeling was indescriable... It was like I had died and was allowed to see all the things that happened that I only saw in my mind's eye...It has movies of where my parents met, the first house my mom ever lived in, the first house my dad ever lived in...my great grandmother is on there...relatives I've never met... all interacting with my brothers when they were kids...

I watched that dvd with my dad in January...it's one of the last memories I have with him as well.

My great uncle's son found an old color film from a family reunion that was filmed just after WWII. It was about 15 minutes long and the fact that it was color was a real treat, as color home movies were not popular yet......Unfortunately, all 15 people in the movie are now dead but 1. My great aunt by marriage and the only one still alive, who was in the movie, very young and very beautiful, could not remember a damn thing about the making, what year or where it was filmed! My brother asked her a couple of hours after watching the movie about 25 times how she felt about seeing it and if it made her sad.....her reply was "hell no, I am happy to see everyone again"!

others mean and rueful of the western dream"
