The phrase, "That's just wrong!" and the various similar iterrations expressing repugnance. I've basically concluded that saying, "That's just wrong," is wrong. JohnRich 4 #8 March 15, 2006 QuoteJudging from all the 'gas runs', they probably, have good reason to make folks pay first. "Gas runs" - ugly picture. I'd prefer to call them "gas drive-offs". This trend started in the big city when the gas prices went up after the hurricane. I guess when a fill-up becomes $40 instead of $20, the number of people who drive-off without paying goes way up. So they treat everyone like a potential thief, which pisses me off. You have to go inside once to deposit some money, not knowing how much you need, go back out and pump your gas, then go back inside a 2nd time and get your change. And stand in line both times. And hope the clerk remembers how much deposit you paid. I've been thinking of a new response to this "pay first" policy. It would go like this: When I go inside to pay my pre-pump deposit, I would demand a receipt for my deposit. The clerk would ask "Why do you need that?" And my response would be something like: "Well, you don't trust me to pump my gas without first paying for it, so why should I trust you to remember how much money I've paid you up front? Can I have my receipt now, please?" I haven't used it yet, but I'm sorely tempted. But at the least the small towns in Texas still trust me to pump first. That and beer runs. You've got a good idea with the pre-reciept, reciept. Why, like you said, should we trust that clerk? He doesn't trust us... fair return is no robbery.
