Why does the word "Icon" when typed into the text of a post...then become a 'link' to the Icon website?

I didn't 'link' it for THIS post, yet there it is?!:o:S

Is it a glitch, or intentional?

The links below illustrate what I'm talking about too, one is mine the other someone elses.

I'm sponsored by another manufacturer, don't want 'my guys' to think I'm a turncoat!;)

probably for the same reason you can't send a pm without an aerodyne add at the bottom of it.:S Someone spent some money is what i am guessing.;)

That's cool if that's the case.B|

But I wish I could change the word in MY story to something meaning the same, but 'unlinkable'.
(is that even a word?);)

Paid ad.

Websites get paid by advertisers for certain words. Those words will automaticly link to the website of the person who paid for it.

edit: open and close a tag in the middle of the word and it doesn't link. If this continues, I'll cancel my Premier membership. It is, in my opinion, crossing the line by turning editiorial material into advertising.

edit2: that complete Aerodyne rig I was planning on purchasing? If this feature doesn't go, I'll buy something else.

Aerodyne :)
Whee. The whole thing is pretty screwed up. If I try to link the word Aerodyne to anything (the link above should go to PD's site :P), it gets overwritten. Therefore any existing content on this site linking anywhere other than the Aerodyne website will be masked and effectively lost.

Never mind that a post in History & Trivia talking about an appeal to purchase a headstone for a deceased skydiver and icon of the sport is now an advertisement for a harness/container.

I think I'll stop now; I'm getting all worked up and pissed off. I'll give it a fortnight before cancelling my membership.

Good points,Dave. It is a slippery slope. I understand the need for funds to support the site, and obviously, I yet to pay for my postwhoring through premier membership. But this, while damn slick functionality for advertisers could get really ugly, really quick, particularly if it doesn't exclude brand names that are also common English words.

Yup!

And it's definitely understandable...:)

I personally don't have a problem with it, I just didn't realize it was happening.

Kind of threw me, when a word in a post I wrote was 'linked' to a website that had no correlation to the post.

It's all GOOD!B|

Edited to add:

I think I'm going to make a rig called BOOBIES!

Imagine the refered links I'd get!:$

While I do understand the ire of having one words turned into advertisments :S.....pissing off the one with the Red Hot Fork may not be advisable :|

May I suggest NOT thwarting his newest revenue by redirecting links..... and posting to the suggestions and feedback forum with alternitive suggestions instead ;)

I think anything we can do to thwart this is the right thing to do.

I would resent (like crazy) having my words turned into ads. Fortunately icon is not a word I use, although I do use the word emoticon. And I do not like what the preview of this post is showing me even a little bit. It's an outrage.

I'm all for making money, but there is a line, and this crosses that line.

A lot of words in our lexicon contain the -icon particle: emoticon, catholicon, iconoclast, and many others. How ever will DZ.commers go on freely discussing the wonders of biconvex and biconcave lenses? How, I ask you, shall anyone ever refer to a biconditional from now on? What about multiconductors?

Brace yourselves, for even such an iconically sacred concept as silicon boobies also gets horribly twisted. This blows my mind into a state of semiconsciousness.

This unintentionally anticonsumer policy must be brought to an end, for it hurts Aerodyne and their Icon.
Shall we all rise iconoclastically and suggest that perhaps a semiconservative advertising approach is in order?

Hey airtwardo,

I've posted some comments on this in the Feedback and Suggestions forum.

Those who threaten to cancel their Premier Memberships because of linked keywords, and those who have found a new cause in life to "resists" as much as they can; I'd hate to see you leave or spend too much time on much-ado-about-nothing but I would love to hear your suggestions and feedback.

Read a bit more about how we will manage this product. It's a good option for advertisers and it's far less obnoxious than pop-up flash ads or huge mid-page flash blocks to users. Linked keywords are used pretty widely on the web. Nothing new here.

Anyway, let's continue this discussion in the appropriate forum. :)

Easy for YOU to say!:)

I only just figured out how to turn ON a dang computer not long ago.;)

Which was the reason for my initial query, I didn't know such things were possible...
(I was actually wondering in MY computer did it via some magical implanted skydiving-gear virus):S

That said, thanks for clearing it up for me, and others.

Like I said above, I don't care...just wondered.

..and it IS much less intrusive than other popular forms of pop-up advertising.

It's ALL Good!B|
