bigfall 0 #80 March 23, 2006 After 19 years of marriage just paid off our last credit card debt so the only thing left is my mortgage! Credit cards make things to easy to get and not think about them until the bills start coming in, then watch out for the outragous interest rates.STEP OUT AND FEEL THE RUSH!!!! KevinMcGuire 0 #81 March 23, 2006 My wife and I were 35K in debt, paid it off, raked up another 45K worth of debt and just recently, paid that off as well. This time, we have cut up all but one of our credit cards and that one has lived it's entire life locked up in a safety deposit box where we can't easily get to it. If I can't pay for it with my debt card, I don't buy it.
chaoskitty 0 #82 March 23, 2006 Thanks for all the input guys. I'm not in excessive debt.. but I am tired of feeding the credit card monster every month. I just wanted some ideas of what has worked for others.
Dougjumper 0 #83 March 23, 2006 QuoteThanks for all the input guys. I'm not in excessive debt.. but I am tired of feeding the credit card monster every month. I just wanted some ideas of what has worked for others. This works for me. I became my own banker so to say and I dont get anything I cant pay cash for pretty much. If its way too tempting and something I need then I save up or I pay it off at the end of the month. The key here is to try and pay a little more toward the principal on the credit card you have every month and start with the lowest amount and get it paid off as soon as you can. Then put that amount on next credit card etc etc. Then sooner or later you will be like me DEBT FREE BABY!! YEA!!
Jumpah 0 #84 March 23, 2006 Check out the book Automatic Millionaire at your local bookstore. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0767914104/104-4039335-3443959?v=glance&n=283155 The basic premise is to set up your finances so that things get done automatically. It also goes into the whole "pay yourself first" idea, which is to say that you pay into savings before you start paying bills. If you don't increase your bills, and your aren't saving so much that you can't get ahead on those bills, eventually your bills are gone and your savings is built up. You can calculate when you'll be a millionaire I started using the principles in here in 2005 with good success. I'm quite a ways from being a millionaire, but its only my first year and I know it'll eventually happen. Also look at multiple streams of income...buy a property that has an apartment you can rent. Tenants are a pain in the ass sometimes, but the income helps to cover the interest on the mortgage, which effectively lowers your interst rate, increasing what you can save. lister55 0 #85 March 23, 2006 I just started reading this thread and could not let this one go by. Its just too funny!! ***Don't go to college. That was my technique. Did apprenticeship instead and got paid while I learnt a trade
Scoop 0 #86 March 23, 2006 All done in house with company. National qualifications. Money in your pocket. Thank you very much! Other alternative for me was to join the army and learn a trade. Couldn't have afforded college and uni and the debt it builds up. I meet so many people that go to university and get into masses of debt because they 'didnt know what to do' or wanted to go 'for the social life' Its not the only option for people out there. At least certainly not this side of Atlantic
lister55 0 #87 March 23, 2006 I think you lost the point here. Im not saying you have to college. Unless you want to learn how to spell. Maybe you should not take things so seriously.

Dumpster 0 #94 March 23, 2006 As soon as my house sells, I'll be debt-free aside from my truck payment. I'd pay that off with the proceeds from the sale of the house, but it's leased, and I want to put a big wad from my profit (after spoiling myself a little-) into a couple CDs for the short term. I'll stay pretty solvent for the forseeable future. Easy Does It

mailin 0 #96 March 23, 2006 QuoteHow did you do it? I'm really sick of it. Dave Ramsey, being from TN I'm sure you've heard of him. Thanks to him and his total money makeover I'm working on being debt free (even my school loans are now paid off, credit cards will be paid off next month and personal loan I took out for AFF/rig, and two fairly new cars (2004 and 2006 models) by year end). Hopefully we will have a substantial down payment on a home by spring 07. It's common sense stuff, but it really works. Check him out: http://www.daveramsey.com Good luck, JenArianna Frances

HeatherB 0 #98 March 24, 2006 Sorry, I mixed up my words. I meant lowering your credit limits can be good for you in general. Not that it is considered with your fico scores, unless it's a balance/credit limit proportion problem. I don't think they penalize someone just for having a high limit. Once somebody has paid off cards with high limits they may want to have their limits lowered so they aren't tempted to overspend again. But if they still have a high balance in relation to their limit, they don't want to have their limits lowered because their fico score will suffer (the balance/limit proportion will be worse). Bad payment histories and high revolving balances do the most damage.
kai2k1 0 #99 March 24, 2006 Except for the house YES!! As others have said in this thread.. Get Dave Ramsey's book "The Total Money Makeover". mouth 0 #100 March 24, 2006 Lots of good advice here. Take some of it. Also if you go out take cash to buy your drinks etc. When it is gone you are done. Alcohol in a bar is way overpriced. I only owe a little for my house and am doubling the payments every month so it should be paid off in the next 3 years. Paying even a small amount over the required will help (unless it is a loan where there is a penality for early payment). I will have some student loans once I finish my masters but even though I'm not required to pay any on it until I finish I pay some every month just to work it down a little while it is 0%. Tightening up just a month will show you a big difference in spending. The longer you do it the more of a habit it will become. BTW, you are not fat, you are beautiful. -- Hot Mama At least you know where you stand even if it is in a pile of shit.
