A good reason not to drink in a Texas bar

Unless they changed the law, it's perfectly legal to have any kind of open liquor container in your car in Texas. For you to violate the law, a peace officer has to see you drinking from the open container.

I don't mean the above as some sort of joke as in, "it's only illegal if you get caught". It is actually written into the law that for you to be in violation, a peace officer has to see you drinking from the container.

The law may have changed in the last couple of years, though.'

I don't know about that. Recently, a buddy of min, told me that his mom was stopped for a broken tail-light. The officer (local yokel) who stopped her, saw an open (empty) beer can that had rolled from under the seat. She was charged with 'having an open container in her vehicle while driving'. She had to pay a fine. Seems as though, my buddy, had been working on her car and had left the empty. Yup! He did pay her fine and etc. His mom has not drank in about 30-some years. I checked with my wife (a cop) and she said that it is against the law, to have an open (alchoholic beverage) container of any kind in your vehicle while driving.

It must be all those east coast liberals moving here that have changed the laws.;)

Naw - just the ones in Austin - Oh wait - same thing - Nevermind -

Texsa can and should kick Austin out and give it back to Mexico.
I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama

You got that right!!!
On a more serious side. Do you recall the days when, on a hot summer day, folks would grab a six-pack and hit the road? There were drive-ins that served beer! I think, it's a good thing, the laws have changed. Not just because I don't drink any longer but, doing stuff like that today? Dayum! what a mess that would be!

Hahahahaha!!!!:D:D

I lived in Austin for about 19 years. I don't know how it is these days, but it used to be a really nice laidback place to live with a lot of good people, but most of 'em used to say bad things about Houston.

Having lived in Houston for quite a while now, I know that the anti-Houston people were really full of shit. I loved living in Austin back then and I love living in Houston now. Houston has a lot of GREAT things about it.

Austin really is a different kind of place politically, though. Maybe Austin really belongs in California and just got lost.:D

If we do give Austin back to Mexico, let's keep our dz.commers who live there and bring 'em to Houston!

I don't know what y'all are talking about. Everytime I have visited Austin I partied my ass off and had a great time. Great weather, good jobs, primo music scene, beer, hot chicks. What's not to like?

You're right in than there are lots of things about Austin to like! It does have its weak points, though.

For starters, the property taxes have always been extremely high. It is the state capital, so there are a lot of government properties that are not taxed, so residents must bear the burden.

The overbuilding that has been taking place for many years has made plenty of developers quite wealthy but has destroyed the character that Austin used to have.

From what I've heard, traffic has become ridiculous.

Pollution of the Edwards Aquifer. I have heard of Barton Springs pool being temporarily shutdown because of (I think) benzene contamination.

I do indeed remember, although I never saw any drive-ins that served beer.

Personally, I don't see the problem with a carload of people drinking and getting shitfaced, just so the driver is sober and not being screwed with by the drunk passsengers.

Drivers drinking, on the other hand, is a bad thing.

I think, the last drive-in beer place in the area was torn down about 15-yrs. ago. Well, it actually burned down, most of it. Rumor has it that some of the folks who didn't like the idea took matters into their own hands. Some say 'electrical short'. Folks would just drive-up, get a beer and visit with folks. There were picnic tables and you could buy chips and pretzels to go with your beer! Hell, I remember, grabbing a six-pack, un-cork one and driving to my buddy's house. Usually wound-up going for more beer! Just try that now!
