riggerrob 643 #1 December 25, 2007 Aerodyne Research Corporation, manufacturers of the popular ICON series of harness/container systems, has issued a precautionary service bulletin #SB271107 that recommends grommet inspection on all affected systems. Affected systems are all ICON harness/container systems, part number P120, manufactured after and including 01 September 2007. A field report revealed that there were some damaged grommets on an ICON container. The ICON was inspected by Aerodyne and it was determined that the grommets had been damaged by the grommet press. The damage can be seen on the inside of the grommet. Grommets need to be inspected to ensure correct and flush seating. Although this could be an isolated incident, as a precaution Aerodyne is recommending all grommets on all ICON container systems indentified above be inspected. riggerrob 643 #2 December 25, 2007 This is a recurring problem in the parachute industry. How many riggers remember "Grommet Mania 2000?" Let's face it: tools wear out! For example, I recently replaced my 5-year-old Stimpson grommet press (size #0) because it was chipped. My Stimpson dies also had an annoying habit of leaving sharp edges on around the inside. I replaced it with a similar die set from Lord & Hodges that only cost US$14.95. It is rumored that L&H dies do not last as, long, but for that price, I can chip two or three L&H tools for the same price as Stimpson tools. I bought my new dies from: Lord & Hodges 362 Industrial Park Road P.O.Box 737 Middleton, CT 06457-0737 C.S.Osbourne 125 Jersey St. Harrison, NJ 07029Phone: (201) 483-3232 csosbourne.com Stimpson 900 Sylvan Avenue Bayport, NY 11705-1097 Phone (516) 472-2000 Grommet dies are also available from Para-Gear. Where you buy tools is less important than the notion of replacing worn-out tools on a regular basis ... replacing tools when they start to leave rough edges on grommets. masterrigger1 2 #3 December 27, 2007 Rob, If the Dies are leaving sharp egdes, they just need to be polished in most cases. This is done by taking them to a local machine shop and have them polished in a lathe. Damaged ones are a different story though..
