Bread turns me on.

Mac & Cheese does that for me;)...ESPECIALLY my good ol' southern grandma's homemade & baked with extra layer of cheese on top--real milk/cream, whatever...no powdered crap. Oh my gosh...I'm calling grandma and having her ship me some right now!:P

Know any good ways to shut down the cravings?

Well, I've been reading a lot of Roman history lately, so I can share a bit of what I've learned and apply it to your dilemma.

1. You can always enjoy as many carbs as you like and not worry about gaining an ounce!

2. You can do what Caligula's older brother did when Sejanus locked him in a dungeon:

Quote

His two oldest brothers, Nero and Drusus, also died. Nero was banished to the island of Ponza, while Drusus' body was found locked in a dungeon with stuffing from his mattress in his mouth to keep off the hunger pangs.

Hope you found that helpful.

Alternatively, if you don't much fancy the taste of your own stomach or polyurethane foam, may I recommend this -- great nutritional meal replacement that seems to satisfy without taking in heaps of calories.

Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

Stop thinking carbs are bad. :D

Never said they were. But he's talking about cravings for simple carbs, like bread.

I don't usually bother arguing on these points, instead I talk about my own experience. I don't do well when I allow myself to eat simple carbs, like bread or white rice, or things made with refined sugar, things made with white flour. My cravings get out of control.

I was craving carbs really bad earlier. It was the kind of craving where I could quite easily eat a whole loaf of bread or down a huge bag of tortilla chips or a whole pile of tortillas.

I hear Meth is a good stopper of carb cravings.

I have fantasies about bread and cheese also. and I do not deny myself them as long as it is a healthy dose and not overindulgence. I have the same problem baby! I ride my bike around the block and suck down a big glass of water when I get back. It is helping to fight that craving and giving me a healthy one in its place. try it. cant hurt!;)-Caress
I've learned.... That being kind is more important than being
right.

Low carb diets are for people who don't exercise. You can make yourself pretty sick.

That's funny. With a combination of exercise and a low-carb diet, I made myself pretty healthy, starting from an extremely unhealthy place. And, if you've actually read the Atkins book, he says, somewhere in there "If you're not exercising, you're not doing Atkins." So your statement above is not true.

There's a lot of misinformation out there about low-carb diets, and a lot of people who are doing them flat-out wrong. If you're doing it right, you're eating lots of vegetables and getting good, complex carbs that way. Most low-carb approaches up the carbs as you proceed in the program, adding in more veggie carbs and whole grains. People look at the "induction" phase of Atkins and think that's how people eat for forever. Nope.

If eating primarily whole foods, cooked and prepared simply, with lots of vegetables is going to make me "sick," I haven't seen evidence of it. Honestly, the way I was eating before made me sick.

If you can, ask your doctor to refer you to a nutritionist. They will work with you to come up with a diet plan that's appropriate for your lifestyle.

I started eating low-carb, then went in to see my doc a few weeks later for an unrelated issue. I mentioned it to her and she wanted to make sure I was following a defined low-carb plan (I was) and she was very supportive of it as a way to lose weight and a way to eat that works for some people, me included.

Kris, I don't mean to come down hard on you, I'm not, it's just that there's no one right way for everyone, and there's so many people doing low-carb the wrong way (without some vegetables in there, you are going to be missing critical nutrients, I totally agree).

Ok... rephrase: Low carb diets are not for athletes, mainly because athletes tend to burn a lot of calories and require more fuel than average, so they end up in a deeper state of ketosis than the casual person who goes for a run a few times a week, consequently, ending up in the hospital. When I was in college there were a couple of dancers who ended up pretty sick because of the low-carb thing. Liver/kidney problems and the like.

One of the reasons low-carb diets tend to work for some people is that they get you to think about what you're eating. When you can't snack without thinking about it, and you actually have to pay attention to what you put in your mouth, you usually end up eating less.

ya just go get a big plate of pasta and chow down! As long as you work out enough it doesn't matter how many carbs you have.

Its a great source of energy. I used to eat pasta during my swim meets for energy.

now if you sit on your ass and don't do a damn thing to keep healthy ya you might wanna cut back of the white bread and mashed tatters:P

OK...I started a low carb diet last week. While I'm not following it to the exact T, I AM having a decent amount of success. I'm staying at around 20 net carbs a day for the first few weeks.

When I go shopping, I read the labels very carefully. I buy meat...I also buy vegetables. Even bought low carb yogurt, low carb cottage cheese and some low carb ice cream bars.

I go to the Atkins website and check on carbs, calories, etc. before I eat anything that might not have a label.

When I'm looking for something crunchy, I have a portion of pork rinds.

So far, I've been able to resist any tempation to eat bread, rice, pasta and pizza. If I DO slip, I'll count the carbs in my day...and adjust accordingly. If I slip TOO much one day, I'll wash that day and start fresh the next day. I won't wallow in guilt and just drop the diet because I had ONE bad day.

You can do this, Walt!

ding, ding, ding, we have a winner... which is also the reason I'm not (and never will be) on a low Carb diet. :P

Low carb diets are for anyone whose body reacts to it in a healthy way to achieve the objectives they want to achieve.

Oh... don't get me wrong... Its cool for you (or any one else to actually do it) Its just not for me...

I'm not even on a formal diet--low carb or otherwise. I started this thread because I tend to severely crave and overeat carbs at times.

Walt

I'm in the same boat. Since I have been working less, I have put a few pounds back on. I am addicted to carbs. I have found the easiest way to shed the pounds is just stay away from processed white foods. I don't worry if I actually eat something that has carbs in it or if I occasionally cheat. I just don't have them as the main source of calories. Started it a couple of weeks ago and I'm down five pounds. Now I just need to start being more active and the rest of the weight will come off and will stabilize where my body wants to.

That is racist. You are a racist!!!

Right now I am. I'm part of Jessie's rainbow coalition. I prefer green beans, orange carrots, red bell peppers, brown mushrooms and yellow squash instead of white rice or pasta.:P

It worked for me too. I lost 35 pounds when I started the Atkins 3 years aso. My doc said I had hypoglycemia (not sure how to spell it) and that I needed to break my sugar addiction. Boy did it work! Of course, you are supposed to gradually add the good carbs back. Three years later and I haven't gained but maybe 5 pounds back. I don't eat refined sugar period. There's no nutritional value in it at all.

Quite ironic that you lost that weight and now you're going to have to wear weights to do RW.:D
