2fat2fly 0 #1 March 28, 2006 I got a call from my bank yesterday checking on what they called "questionable" charges to my checking account. After 3 attempts, i got through to the automated system and the charge was my ISP autodraft. This draft has been happening every month for the past 4 years, but now it's questionable. I think they just randomly call account holders about their most recent charges to make it look like they are paying attention.I am not the man. NWFlyer 2 #3 March 28, 2006 Was it combined with some other charges that might have been outside of your normal pattern of spending? If not, then that sounds like not a very good use of the system. I've been called a couple of times about abnormal patterns. One time it was right while I was in the process of moving (and pre-cell phone ubiquity) so they didn't have a current number for me, and I was traveling all over the world and using the card to make phone calls (which can be a big red flag that there's something wrong, from what I understand). They finally got me when I was making a purchase - the clerk had to phone in to get approval and came back and said "They want to talk to you." I can definitely understand and appreciate the calls - spending a bit of money up front to reduce fraud on the back end keeps their costs down and, ultimately should help keep our costs down). If they do it right, of course!"There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. 2fat2fly 0 #5 March 28, 2006 Nope, nothing unusual. they used to deactivate my card if it was used more than X miles away from my home. I travel for a living, that was inconvenient-The first couple of times it didn't other me-other than the fact that it would take a couple of hours to get it reactivatedI am not the man. NWFlyer 2 #8 March 28, 2006 QuoteAw, that's cute, you and Icon have the same sig. Hmm... I'm not sure if he copied me or I copied him. Mine came up on my google homepage as quote of the day a couple days ago. I'm going to claim that I was first. Just because I've definitely done other things first. pincheck 0 #9 March 28, 2006 differs from bank to bank same goes for credit card companies as well. Fraud departments who are on the ball get unusual account activity flagged and will contact the customer. The problem comes from users who flag everything up from $1 and up they swamp the system making it harder to detect fraud. if you go abroad or travel out with your region let your bank/credit company know it helps them watch your account and could also save you the pain in the ass trying to reclaim your cash Billy-Sonic Haggis Flickr-Fun
bmcd308 0 #10 March 28, 2006 On a first date about two years ago, my cc was declined. I gave another and moved on. After the date, I called to ask why, and they told me that teh charge (dinner at a restaurant near my office where I eat often) was unusual so they had declined it. They then turned the card back on. When my statement came, I had $10 thousand of charges in different countries South America for music equipment that I had to dispute. Let's see, which one did their computer actually tell them was odd? Brent ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
gravitational 0 #11 March 28, 2006 had a similar experience but what they did is shut down my debit card and left a voicemail for me. Small problem. I was out of the country. ------ Michael
