shropshire 0 #5 March 30, 2006 Hi -- What would you like to know? I dont know much about the techie bits... I just go out and bimble up and down a river (great for a workout and saves me old knees from running injuries). I have a Perception Dancer clicky - which I use on the flat waters of Cambridgeshire (I also use it when I marshall for a series of adventure races - also on flat water... I dont do scary stuff) - It suits me fine. (.)Y(.) Chivalry is not dead; it only sleeps for want of work to do. - Jerome K Jerome

scrublink 0 #10 March 30, 2006 I would like to try whitewater, but It looks like a lot of planning must go into an excursion. I figure that since I am so close to other types of water I can just go paddle after work. Seems like a good way to keep active and keeps you outside. After I figure this out I will probably pursue white water. Ed
selbbub78 0 #11 March 30, 2006 ya i started with flat water. learned some basic moves, and whatnot. it's all good. start flat, but go to white soon after CReW Skies,"Women fake orgasms - men fake whole relationships" – Sharon Stone "The world is my dropzone" (wise crewdog quote) "The light dims, until full darkness pierces into the world."-KDM
Stumpy 284 #12 March 30, 2006 Do you mean marathon/ sprint style boats or plastic whitewater style. I know lots about the first, very little about the second.Never try to eat more than you can lift
mlackner 0 #13 March 30, 2006 It sounds like you're interested in paddling on the lake, which is great, but eventually you're going to want to do whitewater because whitewater is where things start to get fun in a kayak. My advice would be to get an older model whitewater boat like a Pirouette or a Dancer. They work great in flatwater cause they're fast [long straight hull] and are awesome beginner riverrunning boats as well. They are easy to roll and you can get them used for cheap [$200-300]. Remember you'll need to spend money on a paddle, sprayskirt, pfd and helmet too... Definately don't buy any boat new! They last forever. I have one boat that fell off the van into a Talus filled ravine at 45mph... it was fine!
Brains 2 #14 March 30, 2006 Hey i have a river runner, it works fairly well for flat water (not real fast) and works pretty good for whitewater also. I picked it up used for 350.00. Both are fun, and i usually get to do both on my trips. Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.
scrublink 0 #15 March 30, 2006 I think you might refer to it as marathon. Sea kayak is what I would call it. Long distance type thing with some ability to handle the ocean. Ed
