Allergy question

Recommended Posts

Ok..my allergies are getting worse. They've not been this bad since I was about 13 y.o. (I'm 29).

I have a script for Claritin from the VA, and I have had to spike it with benadryl...the side efx of which are not too thrilling to my boss...

Plus, does long-term heavy benadryl use have any carcinogenic or other efx?

I need something...Shots-I tried them 10 yrs ago, and they did nothing.

Allegra--useless.
Zyrtec--have to spike it also.

Any Allergists/fellow allergy sufferers out there? I need help/advice.

I also do not want to lose my FAA Flying Class 3 medical...

Flonase works great for me. Singulair works really well too. (Flonase is a nasal spray, Singulair is a once a day pill.) You need to take them for a few days before they become fully effective, but I've noticed a difference with both on the first day and you should not need to "spike" them with anything else.

Sometimes with the prescription antihistimines, you need to change them up because you develop a tolerance for them, so you might even try Allegra or Zyrtec again. That's worked for me in the past, anyway! Good luck!

Oh, and most of the OTC stuff has too many side effects to use during the day if you need to be productive. There's a reason benadryl is the main ingredient in most OTC sleep aids!

I agree with everyone who suggested nasal steroids....I personally use Zyrtec-D and Rhinocort. That keeps me pretty even and being from Missouri (the center of all pollens and molds) thats saying something. As far as the class 3 medical....I have one and just under the medication portion I just list Claritin.Zyrtec isn't approved by the FAA yet. They are about 30 years behind on everything.

Nasonex!!! or Nasacort works absolute wonders!!!

Nose spray rocks!

Ditto on the Nasacort. It changed my life...seriously. The thing is, you have to use it everyday no matter how you are feeling.

Good luck with that.

Screw Allergy meds. I found that what I was prescribed didn't work. All it did was cost me a whole lot of money. Allthough what did work to help alleviate my allergies was vigourous exercize. For some reasion working out cleared everything up for me. If I stop working out my symptoms come back in about 2 weeks.

Another vote for a steroid nose spray, I use Nasonex every night. Note that we are saying a steriod spray. It is NOT good to use a regular spray every day.
