But - same boogie - got drunk and left new camera gear outside - it was found in wingnut's trailer - thanks Katie and Chuck. BUT - at the same boogie - my cables dissapeared - my guess is that someone borrowed them and just never returned - probably a mistake.I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
AggieDave 6 #3 April 3, 2006 Someone from the staff locks up the hangers and everything at the end of the partying. That helps some. Other than that, we've never had a problem. Right - never meant to imply that you were a lying cheating stealing bastard or anything . . . No - it's just where it ended up being stored in safe keeping - "Thank you Wingnut" should have been included earlier.I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun

yardhippie 0 #10 April 3, 2006 I there's not anyone that makes me nervous, but then again Im the trusting type. I do not/ will not ever leave my gear/video, etc. out at the DZ. Im just protective like that. I have seen gear and equipment out all night and never been a problem, but that doesnt mean that it couldnt happen. There was a break in and someone stole all the Gatorz out of the case one night. missg8tordivr 0 #12 April 3, 2006 Camaras would be the best thing in order to get any theives called out. It really sucks that people have to take things that we work for and that contain our personal lives on them. I got a nice camara stolen at Bridge Day.....so now any time there is a big get together, I always make sure I keep my stuff secure, or on me. Hope your stuff turns up Robby!*** F LORIDA! waltappel 1 #13 April 3, 2006 As much as we like to think differently, more than ever, the skydiving community is a reflection of our whole society--the good, the bad, and the ugly--and it is naive to think that only good people are attracted to our sport or that bad people will leave their bad behaviors at home when they go to the drop zone. The fact is that the expectation of us all treating each other well at all times based soley on the fact that we share the same hobby is extremely naive, at best. When I was young in the sport, I was extremely shocked and disappointed when I was jerked around by a fellow jumper. Back then, most of us considered the sport a sort of brother and sisterhood and acted accordingly. It just wasn't that way for a few, though, and the sport has not only grown larger, the mentality has changed. We do not look out for each other as well as we once did. It's truly an awful thing when good people get jerked around but it happens in our society and it will continue to happen in our sport. If indeed that laptop was stolen and the culprit is identified, I hope that person is prosecuted and the laptop recovered with data intact. Part of me truly wants to believe there was an explanation for that missing laptop that doesn't point to one of of own being a thief. Walt
stitch 0 #14 April 3, 2006 Here, its not the skydivers I worry about, but the spectators. And we always have quite a few, especially on weekends. They seem to have a tendcy to wander into areas that are off-limits to them i.e.;the RV park, etc."No cookies for you"- GFD "I don't think I like the sound of that" ~ MB65 Don't be a "Racer Hater"
labrys 0 #15 April 3, 2006 I didn't vote because there isn't any middle ground in the choices. I trust every I know at my DZ and have always felt comfortable leaving things in my gear bag unattended. Year before last my Digitude walked off though. So there must be a local or visitor who isn't that trustworthy.Owned by Remi #?
pilotdave 0 #16 April 3, 2006 I've only known (in person) of one DZ thief... luckily not a local to me, but people around him know about it. It was a boogie, and a camera flyer had left his camera hooked up in his trailer to dub the day's worth of tandem and boogie videos. He stepped out to the bonfire for a while and spotted someone going into his trailer then coming back out. Later that night he realized his camera was missing. He questioned the guy that had walked into his trailer, who claimed he hadn't taken anything. So we searched the DZ for hours and couldn't find it. The camera flyer had been given permission to search the car that the suspected thief was riding in, but he'd only taken a quick look. It was packed up since everybody was leaving early the next morning. So we searched every bag in the car. Hidden down under most of them was the suspect's gear bag. Sure enough, there was the camera with the day's tape still loaded in it. Somehow the thief, who was sleeping in the manifest trailer, came out of it uninjured and only banned from one small dropzone 1000 miles from home. He got VERY lucky that someone at that DZ was opposed to violence because that camera flyer had already opened his can of whoop ass and knew how to use it. JRock 0 #17 April 3, 2006 Unfortunately there are bad people in every environment. Considering how much this stuff is worth and every skydiver knows what gear costs... I would lock it up...

labrys 0 #19 April 3, 2006 QuoteSorry to tell you but there is not always a gray area in everything in life. As though I implied I thought there was? I don't think you could leave a pot of gold out overnight at my DZ and find it in the morning. I also don't think anyone would steal an empty pizza box. I wouldn't take anything from anyone. So I had no answer for your poll.Owned by Remi #?

andybr6 0 #21 April 3, 2006 I left my altimeter, Prodytter, gloves and hook knife all inside me helmet at my DZ. Thanks to the English weather didn't realise it until i was moving some stuff in my house around two weeks later. I phoned the DZ office and they said "we were wondering whose that was"; someone had kindly handed it in and the CCI had locked it away. I guess it all depends who finds it but i thought i would contribute a 'nice person' story. edited to add: I did not vote as I would go somewhere in between not leaving a pizza box and leaving pot of gold. There are tandems and their families along with pilots and plane spotters around so I guess you have to take care of your stuff. ------------------------------------------------ "All men can fly, but sadly, only in one direction"

L.O. 0 #23 April 3, 2006 When it comes to food, you had better not leave anything at the DZ for more then a week or it's mine. As far as the pot of gold, I leave $15000 worth of stuff there and the DZO has at least triple that. We are a club and most of the jumpers who make more then 100 jumps a year have the keys to the DZ. We are not the most coth(not sure about spelling sorry) or well mannered but there is honor among skydivers. We had a thief at Rantoul this year and it was awesome how the group came together as a whole. We all kept an eye open and watched each others backs. we got him and everyone got their stuff back. I refuse to believe that any skydiver is a thief until he proves it to me. I know thats dangerous but I love the sport and the people in it. So, thats just the way I am Plus I have very good insuranceHPDBs, I hate those guys. AFB, charter member.
wmw999 2,587 #24 April 3, 2006 I used to be a lot more trusting. But DZs are more anonymous than they used to be, which means more of a problem with theft. People are less likely to steal from their friends than from acquaintances, or people they just see. I've had weights and a helmet with a pro-dytter walk away Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
PrairieDoug 0 #25 April 3, 2006 There were a number of thefts at Rantoul last year, including jump tix and camera equipment. Fortunately, the lowlife responsible for them was caught by security and AFAIK everything was recovered. Doug
