In most cases it has nothing to do with manufacturing at all, it has to do with importing. If a camera gets imported by Sony into the US then it is a USA version, and covered under warrantee by Sony. If it gets imported via other means then it is not covered by Sony. The cameras are the same, just how they got over here is different. B&H often sells both versions, USA and import, of their products to give their customers the option of getting a cheaper, though not covered by warrantee through the manufacturer, product.
