windcatcher 0 #1 April 15, 2006 What are your favorite exotic or odd fruits? I tried papaya last night for the 2nd or 3rd time, but unfortunately I don't like it. Today I tried Kumquats, which are amazingly SOUR and sweet, like candy. They look like cute little oranges, very innocent-looking...go ahead and try em. I have never tried plantains, quince, guava, passionate fruit, persimmon, longan, lychee, and I am sure there are one or two others. I would like to try them, except I have never seen them in stores. Do you guys like the taste of any of those fruits? There is some kind of fruit out there, that smells like rotting flesh on the outside, the Durian. Anyone ever try it? I enjoy fruits immensely: mango, strawberries, watermelon, plums, oranges, lemons, limes, pineapple, kiwi, apples, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, bananas, apricots, peaches, grapes, pomegranates, cranberries, honeydew, squash, pumpkin, figs, dates, olives, grapefruit, tangerines, clementines, avocados, starfruit, and nectarines. I don't care too much for pears or cherries, but everything else I could eat every day. What do you like? Mother to the cutest little thing in the world... wmw999 2,600 #2 April 15, 2006 The only fruit I've ever tasted that I don't care for (and growing up in Brazil, I've tasted a lot of fruit) is a little orange one called the mangaba. To me it always tasted kind of spoiled. One I haven't tried but would like to is the durian (the one you described). I love fruit -- I'll pretty much always try something I've never eaten before, as long as it isn't crawling. narcimund 0 #3 April 15, 2006 QuoteThere is some kind of fruit out there, I think it grows in Asia; it smells like rotting flesh on the outside, but inside it supposedly contains one of the most heavenly tasting fruits. Anyone ever try it or know what it's called? You're thinking of durian. Yes, it smells and yes, I like to eat it. But I think you have the wrong impression. Durian isn't like any other fruit in the world. There's no sweetness, no tartness, and has basically nothing in common with any fruit you've ever eaten. Describing durian never sounds good to westerners but here goes my attempt: The flesh is like extremely mild custard or overripe banana with flavors of onion and garlic. It's extremely complex and gives a different flavor experience every bite. The durians I've had all tasted different from each other as well. The smell is strong. In Malaysia we smelled durian stands before we saw them. It's not pleasant but I wouldn't say "rotting flesh". It's more akin to stinky shoes. Durians are sometimes imported to the US and Canada. The imported variety doesn't smell bad. I've never eaten them. Canned durian just sounds vile but I feel that way about everything in cans. LouDiamond 1 #4 April 15, 2006 QuoteI enjoy fruits immensely You need to take a vacation anywhere in South America then. There are fruits and vegetables here that I have yet to see in the US or anywhere else. I'm not talking about 1 or 2 but a laundry list of fruits. Vertifly 0 #5 April 15, 2006 If you ever can get your hands on a 'baby-kiwi' ...they are incredibly good. At first I thought it was a small fig or something because it has no hair like a kiwi and you are supposed to eat the skin like a fig. It is much sweeter than a normal kiwi also. But the funny thing is that it isn't a different breed of kiwi or anything...it is just picked more early in the season. yumbo!!!!!!!
windcatcher 0 #6 April 15, 2006 Yep, I found the name for it by doing a quick search on goggle for "rotting flesh fruit." Hey, this is what it was called on the educational program I watched several years ago. Guess I should have done the search before posting eh? and Lou, I would love to take a trip and discover fresh fruits I have never seen anywhere. Mother to the cutest little thing in the world... marcandalysse 0 #8 April 15, 2006 Wendy, tudo bem? Durian is like a smellier version of Jaca, ever eat that in Brasil? A nice ripe (orange color) carambola is tasty. I have them in my yard in FL. Can find them in grocery stores but may not be very tasty that way. Did you mention MANGO? Many different types, some sweeter than others, once again, storebought may not ripen properly.... And there are many many different kinds of bananas, all tastier than the type found in grocery stores....the smaller the tastier usually..... Another Brasilian fruit found in FL is Jaboticaba....like a tasty grape.... marc "The reason angels can fly is that they take themselves so lightly." --GK Chesterton

monkycndo 0 #16 April 16, 2006 Except for the durian, I've tried all the fruit listed. I have family in Ecuador and the fresh, ripe fruit is so good. Mangos, papayas and pinas soo sweet you need a shot of insulin before you eat them. 50 donations so far. Give it a try.
