eeneR 3 #1 April 15, 2006 I am going after my CCNA and was curious about the tests and any recommendations on books/simulater software. Right now I have the one written by Richard Deal with the network simulater by Boston. mnealtx 0 #2 April 15, 2006 Not sure about the book, but from what little I've messed around with it, the Boson sim seems to be pretty good.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. POPS 9708 , SCR 14706
eeneR 3 #3 April 15, 2006 Cool, unfortunatly it is only a partial version. I am contemplating picking up the full version upgrade to work with. She is not a "Dumb Blonde" - She is a "Light-Haired Detour Off The Information Superhighway." eeneR TF#72, FB#4130, Incauto
mnealtx 0 #4 April 15, 2006 I think the one I have is a partial, too... I need to get new books. I'm still trying to twist the company's arm into sending me to ATM class...Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. POPS 9708 , SCR 14706

mnealtx 0 #6 April 15, 2006 OH, I'm trying!!! They keep saying that there's nothing in the budget for me to get the training...since it's not a critical upgrade like moving to Active Directory / Server 2003 was for the sysadmins... I keep showing them how it will give us more redundancy and reduce the amount of equipment we'll have to keep on hand... and round and round it goes....Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. Bolas 5 #7 April 15, 2006 Got sent to Cisco boot camp 3-4 years ago and got my CCNA that Friday becuase my group was supposed to take over that function but it never happened. I think we did practice tests with Boson. Just know how to subnet and your network layers. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.
hookitt 1 #8 April 16, 2006 Number 1 and 3 are pretty good. Sybex always has good stuff. You do need to know quite a bit more than just subnetting and the 7 layers of the OSI model though This is what is involved in the test. Just know the material, get some hands on with a real router or 2 if possible. The Simulator will work and probably work better only because you have to know the commands in full. On a real router, you can just hit tab or ? to see what's next. (you probably know that already though) Often you can retrieve router applications from a file sharing network if you're into that sort of thing. My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... eeneR 3 #9 April 16, 2006 Were you refering to 1 and 3 from the top list? or the overall list? I was looking at the simulater listed as #3 on the top to supplement the book I have now. But wanted to see if anyone had exp with that one before I dropped the $$.She is not a "Dumb Blonde" - She is a "Light-Haired Detour Off The Information Superhighway." eeneR TF#72, FB#4130, Incauto
SuFantasma 0 #10 April 16, 2006 CCNA & CCNP ( no desire to be a CCIE): Ditch the books... if the company is paying for the credential, go to a bootcamp... otherwise, CCNA + $1.93 will get you a Venti Regular at Starbucks.... Cheers Nope, this I am doing on my own. Want to get more into the networking side of IT. CCNA so I can step into that. After CCNA going after CCNP, CCDP or CCSP. Subnetting and OSI layers might help you pass a basic MS cert, but not Cisco. If you're serious get your hands on some gear via ebay, etc and play with it. Wring out anything you can and then read about anything else.Owned by Remi #?

That is part of the plan, I am just looking for additional information. I know most of the basic commands etc, but the reading part is to fill in the gaps, then will go beat on the 6500 we have sitting there. Just sitting and playing isnt going to teach me the underlying stuff I need to know in order to fully grasp all that is involved I am very hands on, but I need to gain the information on what does what so that I have that information in my head to logically be able to troubleshoot the stuff.
