Small Towns Are Great!

Recommended Posts

My mother lives in a small town in North Carolina. Recently she had a stroke and spent two days paralyzed on the floor before the police were called to break into her house to rescue her.

Over the past couple of weeks I've learned that at least five people called to check on her during that time. Her niece, who only spends one day a week in that town, came to visit on the second day and found her. [She's my hero!]

Mom is now in a nursing home in the town. Everyone who works in the nursing home already knows her and is glad to have her there. She gets visits from people in the church, friends, neighbors and people that she does business with.

I spoke to her bank yesterday. After helping me with her accounts they told me that they are going to pray for her and visit too. I don't know anyone in my bank. Mom knew everyone.

I found out that a neighbor already takes her trash out to the curb on trash day. I didn't need to make special arrangements to have that done.

In the past, if I called to order flowers for her, the florist would say, "Oh yes, I know Miss Mary. She lives on Denim Drive."

I grew up in a suburb of Washington, D.C. It's not like that here.

Do you have any good or bad stories about small towns?

I grew up in a small town in North Carolina. It took me a while to realize that the entire world wasn't so nice.

A trip to London when I was 16 was such a culture shock. I was being my polite, well mannered, friendly self and I got soooooo many strange looks. I remember being pissed my first day there because everyone was so rude. :D

I have traveled quite a bit and I have yet to find a place as friendly as small southern towns.

The good things about small towns are as you mentioned. Everyone knows and cares about everybody else. That is also the bad part. You don't ever seem to have any privacy. People always seem to know everything about your life.
Sorry to hear about your mom thoug. That is truly a crappy way to find out about the niceities of small town life.

sorry, no I have some distant relatives there and that whole town has an interesting dynamic due to the mill community.

It is true everyone knows each other there! Especially the older ones.

I visited some of them a while back when I was in college and they were having some kind of parade or another. My great uncle-who is probably near 80- walks right up to the chunky policeman and says "I am thinking of joining the force it looks like they feed well" :o I was preparing for my first visit to jail while banjo music was playing in my head :S try pulling that with a campus cop B|. Since everyone knew my great uncle and knew what a card he was, the cop just laughed it off. I am pretty sure that was the longest I have ever held my breath!

My Mom probably went to school with him. Every time I would go shopping with her she would speak to someone then tell me later, "I went to school with him." :)

You know you live in a small town when everyone knows what everyone else is doing, and the only reason anyone reads the paper is to see who got caught.

I grew up in a small Kansas town and I often miss that lifestyle.
Last night was one of the first nights that the people that live on both sides of me have met for the first time.. they met in my yard, it was nice!
Coming from a small town I want to know the people that live around me and I want to call them friends, but here in KC calling the people around me friends have proven to be hard, but I will overcome and we all will be friends I am sure.
Small towns are great, I miss the pace of life.
Someday after I get out of school I will get back to a small town.

I could tell more stories of incredibly wonderful experiences in small towns in this country. From the East Coast to the West and all in-between. I'll save you from that.
I'm sorry to hear of your Mom's illness yet, glad she lives in a small town where folks care and show it.
I'll say some prayers for her.

Shortly after I obtained my driver's license, I was driving home in the rain. I was going way too fast on a country road not far from my home. I skidded off the road down a steep hill and through an empty field. At the bottom of the hill was a dirt road that lead to a farm, I took the dirt road back up to the main road. Everything was fine. There was absolutely no damage to the car or evidence of the incident except my heart pounding out of my chest and the tire tracks down the side of the hill.

When I arrived home, my dad asked me if I had any trouble with the car. Apparently, someone had driven by, recognized the car, and called my parents.

Small towns are bad! Word travels too fast!

Well, Mom didn't make it, and the funeral was Friday.

Not many people in that town know me. Every day I would take a long walk to relieve some stress. When I arrived at the funeral home on Thursday for the viewing, the funeral director asked me if I were walking around town... now that's creepy... who told him that???
