But I also really like White Zinfandel alot. Did you know that merlot and zinfandel are red grapes? No, really! I swear they are! Blues, Dave Hey we gotta start them somewhere! When I first started drinking wine I was around 19. This guy came over and he brought over a bottle of white zin. He said it was the new "thing" and everyone was drinking it so I went out and bought like 6 bottles of different White Zins. I had my own White Zin wine cellar! The next time he came over he had a bottle of Reisling and said that White Zin was like cool aid compared to this and turned his nose up at my White Zin! So again I went out and bought a bunch of it and put it in my "wine cellar" (ie: kitchen cupboard). It went on like this for a while. Next I think it was Chardonnay, then Sauv. Blanc. Then we jumped to reds! Ooh merlot! We hit a few wine tastings and I started really getting into it. We made a few trips to Napa with friends. Then when I was 20 I got a job at a huge wine store that did wine tastings. I worked upstairs at the cash register at first but eventually worked my way down to working at the wine bar, managing it, setting up the tastings, etc. Part of my job was to open up each bottle to be used in the tastings and taste each one to make sure it wasn't corked or bad. Oh what a horrible job! I was forced to taste all first growth Bordeaux from 82, DRC, verticals of Margaux, La Fite, Latour, Mouton, things any young girl in her early 20s had no right tasting! I swear a million dollars of wine has passed through this body of mine. We tasted old stuff, new stuff, everything in between. We went to dinners. I'd bring all the leftover wine from the tasting and other employees would bring wine. The restaurant owners would bring us wine. The whole place would be drinking wine and just passing bottles around freely. It was madness I tell you! Imagine, if you can, the posters of when they release the Beaujolais Nouveau in France. Drunk, half clothed people singing and dancing around covered in wine. WINE WINE WINE everywhere! The drunker we got the more expensive the wine got! MORE WINE! Trade tastings, wine events, classes for wine glasses! Blind tastings, wine and food pairing, verticals, horizontals! Kevin Zraley courses on a Tuesday afternoon! Who lives like this? Well eventually it had to end and I moved up to San Francisco. I was still into wine but sick of dealing with the public so I got the job I have now. I got to learn a lot about wine in the 5 years I worked there though. This was 10+ years ago. I got so burnt out on it all that at one point I just stopped drinking it all together. My pallet was shot and nothing was good to me anymore since I couldn't afford $400 for a bottle of wine. Now I drink $15 a bottle Argentinian wine as my house wine. I couldn't tell you what's new out there, what's good or even what new wineries are out. I drink red with fish, white with steak and champagne with popcorn! No more rules for me. When my friends want to go up to Napa I scowl and tell them to have fun. Screw that. I'm going skydiving! So in conclusion Dave, we all have to start somewhere. Let them start with White Zin and White Merlot. Dang, I didn't mean to write this much! -------------- (Do not, I repeat DO NOT, take my posts seriously.) Andy_Copland 0 #20 April 21, 2006 As far as wine goes im an uncultured slob. My old man is really into his wines so i've been known to go around his a bit tipsy shall we say and abuse one of his fine reds drinking out the bottle Edit - Spelling 1338 People aint made of nothin' but water and shit. Girlfalldown 0 #21 April 21, 2006 Dammit Icon! Don't be such a girl! For the record, some of the best wines in the world are Pinot Noir. Think Burgundy! -------------- (Do not, I repeat DO NOT, take my posts seriously.)

Dude it is about time. I couldn't help but throw the girly reference in again to one of your posts. I'M JUST FUCKING WITH YOU MAN. Feel free to get me back whenever you can. Oh and I drink australian whites cuz they are cheap and usually easy to drink. I used to love me some reds, merlot and cabernet but those just aren't the same as a good cheap aussie white. I still would love to have me a glass of conundrum.Skymama's #2 stalker -

livendive 8 #25 April 21, 2006 QuoteSo in conclusion Dave, we all have to start somewhere. Let them start with White Zin and White Merlot. Are you pregnant or something? This is a mood I haven't seen you in before! I was at Costco a couple years ago and saw that someone must have made a mistake when pricing wines. They had '97 Kenwood Artist Series for like $28, so I grabbed the few bottles they had left. The gal who rang me up thought $28 was pretty expensive for a bottle of wine and asked me if it was any good. I said, "It all depends on what you like, but I kinda like this one." She said, "Well, I like raspberry merlot...does this taste anything like that?" My response was quite polite.... "Nope, nothing at all like that. I'd stick with what you like." And yes, I'm jealous of some of your tastings. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
