Home inspection nightmare

Recommended Posts

Normally I don't discuss my work with anyone but my client but this is worth mentioning on the internet; This week I was in a basement with a client discussing the plumbing when we noticed an "odor". I suspected that it was a leaking waste vent pipe. Not quite, on further investigation I found in the depths of the crawl space that the main septic line had broken off and RAW SEWAGE was pooling under the dining room EEEEEEEWWWW! The home owner(seller) was "shocked",& the Realtor said " well that's a glitch"..... yikes-the moral of the story;get a home inspection!

After dinner mint anyone?

That WOULD be a nightmare!B|

We have several investment properties and always utilize a professional like you...

On one we were looking into a few years ago, the house was a foreclosure which as I'm sure you know can be both 'good & bad' from a buyers standpoint...

This one was REALLY BAD!:|

The old owner was obviously broke, so he had 'Tapped' into various neighbors services!!:o

Talking ~Water, Gas, Electric, Cable and PHONE!!:S

The place was a maze of well disguised pipes and wires.

Had to 'RUN' away from THAT one!;)

Really? the guy tapped into the neighbor phone?...now thats creative.

I have been in the construction biz involving various trades for over 20 years and have seen a lot of strange artifacts(and animals) in crawl spaces, but you can imagine my reaction when I was confronted by people's "you know what" floating around down there. Needless to say I made a hasty retreat.

Even if you get a buddy who is a contractor to take a look at the place, it's worth it.

Yeah, I heard from the Realtor some time later,
that the guy would use the phone for the internet during the day when the neighbors were at work...
he was trying to run a roofing business from home.:o

I guess he was charged with several theft felonies following that, he'd been stealing services for over a year.

I was told he actually ran a power cable underground from a neighbor, tapping into an outside outlet in such a way it couldn't be seen.:S

You got to admit, he does have a unique way of dealing with those pesky bills every month. Now if only there was a way to get around that damn house payment! LoL

It makes you wonder though. If he had put half as much effort into getting a good paying job, as he did tapping into his neigbors services... would he of had that house fortclosed on?

>apparently he found those house payments too pesky to make...

Yup, you're right. I always try to use my creativity for good and not evil

We did have a guy whose house had a really bad fire, and he had no utilities or permit to occupy the house.
The neighbors noticed a light on in the house, called the police to investigate. The cops found the guy had run electricity to his house lights and tv from the complaining neighbors house.no permits? no problem!

I am currently on the "seller" side of this equation. A potential buyer had an inspection done on my property a couple of weeks ago and the inspector found a very minor gas leak at a right angle fitting leading into the gas meter. The local gas company referred me to a local plumbing company and they figured a wrap of teflon tape would fix the leak. Their tech took a closer look and noticed that the pipe coming into my basement was illegal according to code and promptly shut off my service (as he should do) and he then contacted the gas company who then shut me off from the street. They cannot access the exisiting pipe for the repair so will need to dig up my freshly planted grass seed (curb appealB|) to install a new line from the street. A plus is that my meter can now be installed outside intead of in the basement. A minus is the $1300 to do the job. A plus/ minus are the cold showers until they can get the job done.
Having said all that I would rather it happen this way than have a buyer discover it the hard way.
And I have rolls of teflon tape in my regular work tool kit [:/]
