Spence,

my response is in the same spirit,as I would offer to any unknown stranger who is about to get mugged at a street corner. I intervene, or at least try to.

Mugging (stealing) with a click of a mouse for personal financial gain (a 14,000 song collection to "start my own DJ business"), is no less a crime than putting a knife to somebodies throat. It also carries a max. penalty of 5 yrs imprisonment or $250K for each occurence. You do the math and multiply that by 14,000!

Of course, it's almost bizarre when the next thief offers to replace one stolen collection with her own 13,000 illegally gotten files.

Maybe you (and others) need to learn more about the United States Copyright Act (google!). Lastly, I professionally safeguard an intellectual property portfolio that thus far has required $60M to generate: I have no tolerance at all for IP theft. (And 14,000 songs is not like copying 500 songs for your own personal pleasure.) This is major, willful criminal energy in my books (and that of many lawyers) for personal gain.

Lastly, many musicians are trying to raise and feed a family (most of them are not superstars). Illegally copying and using these files deprives them of their hard work.

/Matthias

P.S.: I watched you going thru AFF, remember? Let me part with a final thought: "The End Never Justifies the Means!" This is in the same spirit as your opening sentence.

P.P.S.: I know what the license rights for copyrighted photography is: they start at $500 per photo for non-exclusive, very limited use. And that's the cheap end. Even if commercial exploitation of songs were only 1/10th of that, I highly doubt your friend could afford 14,000 ($700,000) of those!

In response to your PM mpohl.

I've always considered you a friend so I hope you can accept this with the tone that it is written.I guess where I am coming from with my post is,I take offense to you lurking here and then breaking your silence with an attack of accusations against a friend of mine and someone you don't know.I don't know where Robbie may get his music nor do I care because it has nothing to do with some asswipe stealing his computer. If you want to help the cause of music piracy may I suggest using the New Post button and start a discussion about that in a new thread.Maybe you can educate some of us about that topic. You might be an axe murderer but I would never post such an accusation without some form of proof.

You know, he could belong to a DJ subscription service. You pay a certain amount of money, and they legally send you a certain number of songs. One of my friends is an ex-DJ. The subscription service (I can't remember which one it is) still sends him music.

But Pre . . . that has no controversey in it . . . and well, if he'd have thought of that[read: typed] there wouldn't have been any conclusion to jump to.

It always amazes me when people act like this. I guess kicking someone when they're down makes a persons sad, pathetic life seem a little more meaningful.

[:/]

Ignore him. His posts have no place in this thread anyway.

Soooooo, any updates? Any leads?

(Do not, I repeat DO NOT, take my posts seriously.)

>:( Go to another thread and be a #$*&, k?

Our friends ended up with their laptop stolen and priceless pictures of their family, etc. are now lost to them and want them back. Also, since you're so knowledgeable...is it slander or libel that you're doing? hmmm....damn...I keep forgetting the difference between the two. :)

I'd highly recommend this forum for your post regarding the topic you feel like spewing about.

bingo, plus there are other ways.

it is easy for a dj to get "permission" because it brings the artists music to the masses, kinda like a sponsor.

You toss around the Thief Label quite freely without anything to back it up.

I also have a HUGE MP3 Collection. 100% of it is legal. Most of it came from my personal 800+ CD Collection. I was also Professional DJ for a few years (Music Director for a Station in Carrolton, Ga for a Year and a Strip Club DJ for 3 More Years) but no where near as long as Robby (Rastaricanair) was (10+ years in commercial Radio). As a Professional DJ, Labels send you 100`s of CD`s each week trying to get exposure for their artists. It is very easy to accumulate a 14000 song collection of music that you have legal rights to for personal use.

Many LEGAL services also offer unlimited MP3 Downloads for a set monthly fee.

As for commercial use of the Music.. ONCE you are operating.. the Management companies like BMI/ASCAP and others that you use ask you to periodically log the music you play on a Given day and send that information in. This is how Song Writers and Artists get paid based on the how often their music is played. The Dues/Membership/Royalties each Commercial establishment pay (Quite substantial for many of the Clubs I worked in) is then distributed to the Artists. I can tell you that the standard License fee for a Medium sized Strip Club to cover Use of ALL Music played in that commercial establishment was roughly $4,300 per year in the Mid 90`s. I had to deal with this for every Club I worked at). That was for an Operation that was open and playing Music 10am till 3am 6 days a week.)

The Labels and Artist call you CONSTANTLY trying to get you to PLAY their music.

There is no per song license. You pay a flat rate to BMI/Ascap and that covers you for all Music.

Anyone Collecting a HUGE MP3 Collection for use to start up a commercial DJ service is in no way violating any laws and does not deserve to be called a Thief. Once that Business is started.. Yes they must pay the royalties (AT THAT TIME!!!). Until then.. Anyone is free to RIP to their hearts content any CD`s that they own as long as they are using the music for personal use and not distributing the song over the net or any other way.

But since you know so much about intellectual property rights.. I am sure you already know all this.

If you have anything to add about the THEFT of the Laptop (Which is the subject of this thread), Please do. If you wish a debate over Intellectual Property Rights... Start a Thread.

In the mean time I think you owe an Apology for calling someone a Thief without a CLUE how the music industry handles Licensing.

Not that I can ask any more of any of you, but if you wanted to print a copy of the attachment and post it at your own DZs, I would not be offended. If the pictures at the bottom don't come out on WORD, I've got a PDF copy also.
Every time someone gets their stuff ripped off at a DZ, a dozen other people seem to have similar stories, but I never see flyers or anything to bring attention to it when and where it happens. Maybe a little community outrage is a healthy treatment for the problem.

And if I can help foster it, all the better for my ego. B|

To everyone who's offered your help: You've either gotten a PM or should expect one. You've kept me from gagging on a bile of fury and cynical disgust over this thing for the past three days. Thanks.
