Icon134 0 #1 April 24, 2006 I relocated two snakes, a garter snake and a black rat snake, this weekend (from the backyard of a friend and her boyfriends house...) to my parents backyard they're like me and not only see the benifit of having them around (rat snakes are great for controling rodent infestations...) I'm just curious if anyone else is afraid of snakes (like my friends) or like me... you were excited at the prospect of getting an opportunity of handling a rat snake... Although it was a bit disconcerting when the rat snake managed to escape from the container I had him in just as I was pulling into my parents driveway... I grabbed him and it all worked out ok... soulshine 0 #7 April 24, 2006 I used to have a garter snake as a pet. He was a bit bigger than an earthworm when I first got him, the pet shop lady didn't think he would live so she didn't charge me for him. He was cute in the beginning and I liked having him around (except meal time which consisted of squished blood worms). I learned how to handle him as he grew bigger and I developed a certain amount of knowledge about snakes. Once he outgrew the bloodworms and had to move on to mice I found a better home for him. I couldn't handle feeding him live mice. Ever since then I have had a healthy respect for snakes. I neither like nor dislike them, but I do recognize the need for them to balance our ecological system. When I see one I don't freak out, I tend to let it go its way while I go mine. jumpinfarmer 0 #8 April 24, 2006 I just don't like them can't really explain it. Maybe it's because they are so fast and sneaky. I generally try to ignore them but have to get rid of them once in a while if my mother finds one, she really hates them.
narcimund 0 #9 April 24, 2006 We have a 6-foot boa constrictor. One is a fool not to understand and respect the wild animal's nature, but fear is pointless with something so harmless. There's little overlap between scary and dangerous. First Class Citizen Twice Over

He is about 4 1/2 feet long now and didn't even bother to act agressive. He's gorgeous, but I'm afraid that he is too big to go unnoticed and the area has become too infested with idiots for him to survive another season. :-( :-( -- Jason ---- Jason -- Some people never go crazy. soulshine 0 #16 April 24, 2006 I grew up next to a large river and we would have those come up in the yard frequently. My brother and I, not realizing how dangerous they were, would poke and chase them until my mother decided to show us what it felt like to be treated that way. She chased us with a stick and when she was close enough she poked us with it. Since that "lesson" I have never teased a snake. Good ole mom... she used to try to make the punishment fit the crime. Nightingale 0 #19 April 24, 2006 I used to have to fish them out of people's apartments all the time when I was leasing. We had a lot of trees and bushes, and during cooler weather, snakes would sneak inside when people left the door open. Then, they'd make hysterical calls to maintenance, who'd call me, because our maintenance guy was not a snake person, and I like snakes. I'd walk in, make sure it wasn't rattling and that it had a pointy tail, pick it up and take it to the bushes across the street, usually with the person in the house trying to keep their distance while still being "cool" (men) or screaming about the snake (women) which, of couse, terrified the snake further and made it more difficult to deal with. Contrary to popular belief, non-venomous snakes do bite.
