Troll, or just your lack of humour?

Recommended Posts

why is it that people jump up and down shouting "troll" when somebody is having a wind up on here?

i've just been reading the "free pack jobs" post (and the comment about getting a D licence for dating her instructor) and to me, it was quite obvious from her first post that she was just having a little fun, yet some people just can't stop themselves getting all indignant and outraged about it and have to call her silly names like a troll

why can't people just laugh along without puffing their chests out and being all serious? and also... i can't take anybody on here serious who uses the (childish) name calling of troll, i'll tell you why... you get people who know each other on here doing exactly like the girl asking for free pack jobs, and that is saying outrageous things just for a laugh, BUT because people know them, they don't get called a troll. As soon as a newbie does exactly the same and says things to get people going (and why the hell some people sit at home getting angry at what people type on the internet is beyond me) they apply different standards and get all serious and have a hissy fit because they are outraged at their beloved sport being taken in vain

Either apply the same standards to everybody and be deadly serious and squeel "troll" at everybody daring to take the piss, or lighten up a bit and stop crying troll like a baby at people you dont know.

one rule for one and one rule for another, anybody?

another example off the top of my head is my 85,000 jumps, quite obviously i've not done 85,000 yet to some people on here that is tantamount to an insult to say that i have...they will see it as me dissrespecting them and skydiving for daring to lark around about such a sacrilidge subject. BIG DEAL i say, get over it and yourself.

ban him !!!!

then kill his family !!!!!

(but do it quick, we don't want to get to know him. After we get to know him we can't call him troll for the exact same post)

I think they did that but then he came back each time. I think they even killed him in space but alas he still came back. I think we even let Freddy have a go, still came back.

We do it because it's usually just someone that's already known on here signing in with a new user name and posting something to get a rise out of us. If no one responded the post would just disappear to page two but the person would just try again with something a little more controversial next time.

Duh. :P

As for new posters, imagine being at a huge party. Lots of people you know, lots of people your friends know. All of a sudden someone walks in that doesn't know anyone and starts ripping on the decor, talking shit about the type of wine they're serving or baggin on people for going to the party in the first place (even though he went too). It's just not a very good first impression to make.

As for the post you are referring to, I didn't read it so I'll have to go look but I imagine I'd just laugh too.

I do notice when the older posters bag on the newbies just for asking simple questions and I think that's fu'd up. New skydivers come here to learn. If we treat them with disrespect and make them feel stupid just for asking questions (the same questions we asked when we started) then no wonder they end up lashing out.

In conclusion, try to be nice to each other and get the sand out of your vagina.

blah blah blah.

We've been through this before. Say whatever the fuck you want. But remember two things. 1) This is a moderated site, moderated to the standards of its owner. We are all guests here, even those of us who choose to support the site via premier membership or other forms of financial support. You don't make the rules, and it ain't no damn democracy. 2) Skydiving is a small community and you'll probably want to travel around in it and get to know the people on here in person. If you wouldn't say it in person, you might want to think about whether you'd say it online. (Like, for example, telling Jay Stokes his world record is bullshit because they're not "real skydives.":S)

But by all means have at it. Communities are organic things... and they have their rules, both written and unwritten. People who want to be a part of the community are *generally* more successful if they approach cautiously, watch and get to know those rules before they come in and try to change them. If you don't care about that, then by all means, play by your own rules. Just don't get all pissy if you're called a troll.

The lines between troll, being funny, and being an asshole are only as thick as the relationship that you've built up and the deftness of your wit.

Very, very few of us are witty enough to come right in and start trolling.

Could it be a . . .

Could it be a legitimate question.

there are things that i'd say online that i wouldn't say in person, not because i would be fearful of what the recipient would say, but for having to take on the crowd that would gang up to defend that person. You can say something online and not have to worry about the recipient's friends all rallying round and sticking their ore in. Sometimes its easier to not take on the whole world, than to say something and have to deal with their minions nipping at your ankles in retaliation

I dont think Jay Stokes's attempt is bullshit at all :o my point was that i think it's a bit misleading to call it 600 skydives, when 600 low level parachute jumps is closer to the mark. I'm sure he's a top geeza, i never meant to question him as a person

So, then -- are hop and pops for the purpose of swooping not skydives?

Just for arguments sake . . .

It is my opinion that if your body exits a flying aircraft, and you have gear attached to your body that theoretically will allow you to do this same act again, it is a skydive.

That would certainly be my contention. Couldn't agree with you more.

Yes, that includes tandem jumps. They're different from solo freefalls, but they are still skydives.

i think different, i recon that if you leave the plane and your parachute is deployed straight away, its just a parachute jump. skydiving involves freefall
