If you had 24 hours in Venice, Italy, where would you go, what would you do?

I spent a day there. Just wandered around, never really knew where I was. Besides its all old, you see one building you've seen them all.
But don't go to the "American Pub". Americans aren't welcome unless there wearing suits.

1:Find the nearest bar
2:Get drunk
3:Get laid
4:Stagger back to hotel with last beer in hand staying temporarily sober enough to fight off the inevitable muggers and local predatory life
5:Finish beer, pass out, wake up late and haul ass to airport.
Mission accomplished!

That depends on what you're interested in... Lots of things you could do.

Ride the (crap, it's been too long, what are they called?? - the boats that take you around everywhere) Vaporetto? down the grand canal after sunset.

Hang out in San Marco piazza and eat/drink/listen to music.

Eat lots of gelato and/or fresh coconut purchased on the side of the street.

Hit one or more of the museums.

Venture out to some of the islands (Murano, Burano, etc.) to watch them make glass, lace, etc.

Hang out on the Lido beach.

Do the typical I'm in Italy so I'd better look at a lot of churches and art thing.

Personally if I don't have a lot of time I prefer to do one or two things and really enjoy them, others prefer to run around frantically trying to fit in everything. Figure out before you go which kind of person you (and any others with you) are, and you'll enjoy it more :-)

Wander around. Wander some more. Poke in shops and churches. Eat gelato. Drink espresso. People watch. Drink wine. People watch. Eat more gelato.

In 24 hours, don't try to "do" much. Just "be."

I did the usual tourist things - St. Marks, the campanile, gondola ride, walk along the Grand Canal, fancy restaurant, Doge's palace, topless beach...

I'd do the same again.
