Help! I'm cat sitting for a week

Recommended Posts

I'm not a cat person per se and I have this lil young kitty who's in heat and making a lot of noise and roaming my place. I don't know "cat talk" ...do I whistle? clap? say certain words? How do you talk to a cat? or communicate? She doesn't seem to answer to her name "spooky" however she jumps in my lap while I'm typing and walks across the keyboard:D She freaked me out a few times when she layed on her back and curled her front paws into her chest and stared at the ceiling...thought she was dead:o

Any cat owners/lovers...any suggestions you have would be great!:D

The cat is acting perfectly normal. You really don't need to do anything to entertain a cat--they find their own entertainment. If you want to see how remarkably agile and quick they are, though, walk around dragging a string or rope and watch the cat stalk and pounce. Don't just drag it on the floor, drag it from the floor over a bed, chair, or anything else. They are amazing creatures.

Don't worry about interacting with them like you would a dog. They are not like dogs at all.

Walt

Cats are like Cacti--Ignore them and they thrive.

:Dthat's what I meant when I said I'm not really a cat person...when I ignore them they have a tendency to rub on my leg really slow and hang out.

The only thing a cat needs is a fresh bowl of water.. a fresh can of food a day and a bowl of dry food to tide them over between small cans of wet food.

The rest.. if she wants to come to you.. fine.. pet her.. if she doesnt.. then just leave her alone...

And if you take her into speakers corner.... have her walk across the keyboard... then post it.. it will proably make more sence than some of the people who post there:ph34r:

I find ignored pussy will rub about just anything...

Go buy one of those cheap laser pointers it will amuse you and the cat at the same time.... and if you get bored you can tie the laser on a string and attach it to the ceiling fan !!
Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone!

I like to start my day off with a little Ray of Soulshine™!!

Awww, there's nothing like having a kitty curl up next to ya, kneading and purring. Mine is laying on my leg right now as I type this. I wouldn't know what to do if I didn't have him. I have 4 more of em outside. A Siamese, a Calico and two gray and white ones...all babies...anyone want a cat?? I can't keep em and the people they belong to, can't afford them..that is why I'm feeding them..[:/]

Don't worry about knowing cat talk. Just talk to them normally, if at all.

Her rubbing your leg is a good thing - she's "marking" you as safe, and as a comfort. Her laying on her back staring at the ceiling is also fairly normal; three of my 6 do that on a regular basis. She's walking over your keyboard for one of two reasons; she's either feeling alone, or she's entranced by your fingers typing.

Please DON'T use tin foil as a ball - the little pieces that they tear off - and a rambunctious kitty will shred it - can be swallowed and will hurt their intestines and belly. Use a crumpled piece of paper as a ball, or place a paper bag open and laying on the floor and let them explore it, or do as Walt suggested and trail a piece of string so that she gets into her hunt mode. A few other toys easily available are hair bands, the ring off a milk carton, or a stick with some leaves from outside.

She's making noise because she misses her routine...and because she's in heat (are you sure she's in heat? Lock the damned house down, please...!). There's little you can do to quiet them down except talk to them back when they yodel..."yes, sppoky, I hear you." "what do you need" or "such a pretty kitty"...that will help her settle down a bit and feel more as if she's not quite so alone. I answer my cats whenever they call, even though I know they don't understand me (nor I they), and most often they're just checking to see where I am so they can come over and say hi.

Feel free to pm me with any questions...

Michele

They are not kneading, they are making biscuts:)

:D

My cat is declawed in the front, so he can knead all day.:)
The laser pointer is a fun activity too. I like putting it on the wall and watching his 18 lb. butt jump up.

Thanks for THAT idea Les!:DShe made it to the light switch!! This is like kitty olympics:ph34r:
