Tink1717 2 #52 April 28, 2006 Quoteyes,,, you are an official yankee from Germany,, Wrong. I am an American of German descent. My people didn't get here until 1938. They were running away from Hitler and the dumb assed nazis. So, what's the deal with yankee-reb? Why are you all so obsessed with that? It's not like you can change it, so why the big deal?Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. They ring the bell and runaway... It really pisses him off. -The World Famous Tink. Amazon 7 #55 April 28, 2006 My family arrived in the Carolinas.. in the 1690's Our particular branch of the family moved to FLorida in the early 1820's and homesteaded. Several family members died in action. Others came back maimed. Some parts of my family lost land to the crooked yankee politicians who came in after the war.. The oral history of the family is resplendent with the stories. I grew up with those stories. My grandparents were born in the 1890's and they had PLENTY of relatives who had lived thru the war and its aftermath and they passed that history on to us. People in the south in those great big exteneded families( last reunion I went to in Sanford FL... there were over 700 relatives) have a long familial memory. tso-d_chris 0 #56 April 28, 2006 QuoteQuote Aw dude. Why do I not find myself surprized by your answer? And I'm still a Republican even though the GOP was the party that helped facilitate the Civil War, against the pro-slavery Democrate party. Although, that wasn't the full reason, just a minor footnote in the overall politics involved. That was a pretty major reason. The whole "states rights" BS was made up by pro slavery folks without the spine to admit they were in favor of humans owning other humans. Check out the US Constitution, Article One, Section 10. SpeedRacer 1 #58 April 28, 2006 That Republican/Democrat stuff isn't really relevant today, since the focus of both parties changed radically during the early 20th century. There's really no point in "loyalty" to one party or the other from way back in the 1860's. EricaH 0 #60 April 28, 2006 My family came from Germany in 1742. As mennonites (kinda like Amish, but with cars & electricity) they were pacifists and had no slaves. Their homestead in Virgina had been built by one of my ancestors. In Sherman's march to the sea everything they had was burned down. The yanks told them if they put the fire out, there'd be repricutions. Some of the men put the fire out & 4 of them were shot and the farm set back to fire. It had been a huge thriving farm with livestock & all. Everything was ruined & almost all of the livestock died. A new house was built & is still in my family today. I don't even know how many people are in my extended family. My grandmother is one of 16, grandfather one of 12...I have 64 1st cousins; we rent hotels for smaller reunions. Most of the hostility died with my Grandfather. The younger generation already had a fine farm built up again ready for them to run & had no 1st hand knowledge of "the ruin brought upon the family". there are many sides to the civil war & many people ruined - as it is in most cases of war. There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear. PMS #227 (just like the TV show)
jlmiracle 7 #61 April 28, 2006 QuoteBeing a Southerner who more or less hates Southerners, I only heard this for the first time a couple of years ago. Anyone NOT heard this term before? Yes, I heard it when I moved to the South and so did another guy from the North. He flipped out when his childrens school books refered to the Civil War as the War of Northern Aggression. flyinghonu 0 #62 April 28, 2006 Yea I've heard it. Getting pissed at Southerners for calling it that (not directed specifically at anyone so no pantie twisting please) is somewhat fruitless. No matter what one side or the other calls the damn war, they will probably still hold the same beliefs about it. On another note, why hasn't this gotten moved over to Bitchers...I mean Speakers Corner? "Excuse me while I kiss the sky..." - Jimi Hendrix
