Recommended Posts

Heard it before, I love it. I heard it from a teacher in high school that taught a class called history of the south. He also refered to the north as Yankeedom. he was also my college counselor. GREAT GUY!...

I've heard it many times. Usually its from people who have studied history quite a bit, every once in a while its from an uneducated redneck.

The Civil War has to be one of the most misunderstood events in US history. The version taught to kids in high school is very skewed and incorrect in many ways. Not saying that the South or the North was correct, that's for the individual to conclude, just that the items presented as facts are many times simply a conclusion that someone made and is being presented as fact.

nope. I dont get it.

Im from the south, ive lived in the south my whole life and I love it here, BUT

why would the south "rise up" or "do it again"?
just so we can get our asses handed to us again? :D:S

I guess I just dont see the south really as a people more than a region with a unique dialect. :P

I heard of it back in the third grade. As a first generation American (from Germany), I thought it was odd that people were still bitching about the loss of an insurrection in the 19th century. It's even more odd in the 21st century.
Skydivers don't knock on Death's door. They ring the bell and runaway... It really pisses him off.

I recommend Shelby Foote's 3 part narrative on the war.

It is a definitive history of the period and a great read.

Hey, Lee surrendered, I didn't. And anyone north of the Mason Dixon Line who ventures south is a carpetbagger. :D

I have a teacher friend from Michigan who moved to Florida for a season. The first day in front of her fifth graders she thought she would throw them some softballs... just to see how much history they knew:

"Who was the first president?"

Most of the children answered Jefferson Davis.

History is written by those who win.

Yes and no. Political correctness plays a large part in it. Lincoln was hated by many as president in the north and the south. He allowed major corporations to generate large sums of money simply by what he allowed. Heavy arms manufactures were allowed to sell to the south, as well as other material manufactures. This was while pay lip service to end the war. That's just a scratch in the surface.

If you really think about it though - the south won :)
