Exercise Induced Asthma

Recommended Posts

I know Andrea had a good post going about her son on this a few months back, but I had an uncomfortable situation yesterday, and was wondering a few things.

Here's the deal. For the first time in probably 3 years I decided to go for a run. Not a long one (only a mile) and not at the pace I used to run. I used to run nearly 3 miles a day 3 days a week. Even though Ive put some pounds and dont have then endurance for it, I figured a nice liesurely pace would be fine.
I jogged mostly and walked a bit of the mile. Got it done in just over 11 mins. Toward the end of my run I found it tough to catch my breath ( i figured just out of shape).
so I get in the house and really start having trouble breathing. Not what I'd call an attack (ive seen people have those) but I did have to sit down and focus on staying calm and breathing slow. it lasted a good 15-20 mins.
the kicker is: This is the first time its ever happend! any one ever hear of it setting in at 30?

Im doing gobs of research online, and from what I can read lots of factors could induce it. It was cool (low 70) yesterday, and its spring.

I spose I have to go see a Dr. I really dont like Dr.s.

Thanks for any help.

I haven't heard of it setting in at 30.

Maybe you've had mild asthma for a long time, but the fact that you kept in good shape masked it? Maybe you're feeling it now that you're out of shape? Working out is something that really helps to keep my asthma under control.

And about having attacks.. I've had asthma my whole life.. rarely do I have an actual "attack." Mostly it feels like just a tightening in my chest, like I can't take as deep a breath as I want to. If it happens again, sit up straight, you can put your arms over your head to lift your rib cage, have some caffeinated coffee and try to relax. You can also get a primatine mist inhaler.. it isn't great, but it's better than nothing.

Sounds like asthma to me. I had it as a kid then it went away and now it has come back. Try running 1/2 a mile again and seeing what happens but just stop if your breathing gets hard. If it is an asthma attack - and any shortness is an attack they just vary in severity - then the best thing to do is keep calm. Panicking just leads to a worse attack. Just be careful and take it easy, maybe even run with someone. Once you have identified the problem then go see a doctor. It is treatable and it is safer to have a puffer and not need it than need it and not have it.

Let us know how you get on.

I typically start breathing through the mouth as soon as I start my run. I focus not just on the pace of my run but the pace of my breathing also.

Ive NEVER had breathing problems before. Ive run in cold, hot, humid, dry. You name it. I spent years working outside in labor intensive positions while smoking. I quit smoking nov 1 2004.

the research ive done suggests that cold, or pollen, or other items in the air can spark the problem. I was just curious as to why now.

Ive got the running bug again, and yesterdays run felt really good, but Im not sure i wish to chance it till I get this sorted out.

It may be an isolated incident. I've had that happen to me like twice in my life, and it was years ago.

somtimes sudden exercise in cold, dry air get trigger your lungs to freak out randomly & have a sudden allergic reaction. See if it happens again before you worry that you might have chronic asthma.

My advice would be on cold days: Warm up indoors a little bit first. Get your heart pumping & get so you're breathing heavily. Then head out for your run.

I've read that it is possible to develop new allergies at any time in your life. I checked my favorite site that I go to when my allergies are acting up, Pollen.com. I put in your city to see what the pollen was like there. If you do it, you will see it's just in the high area right now and that Oak, Hickory/Pecan and Mulberry are prevalent. Since you don't like going to the doctor, you could always experiment a little and see if you have the same problem on low pollen days as compared to high days and make a note of what pollen is prevalent. If you see a pattern, you might have your answer.

The inhaler has helped my son tremendously. Even though he isn't playing in the cold anymore he still uses it before every game since we found out that he is allergic to grass. He finds that he doesn't get as winded as he used to when he just does one squirt before the game. And here we all thought that getting out of breath was just the natural result of him running around a lot!

Recently (past 6 months or so) Ive noticed getting winded more easily than in the past. i just figured it to be my falling out of shape, past smoking habit, and other variables.
I think I may stop and pick up a Primatene inhaler for a just in case. That way if it does act up again at least I have a little something.
I dont expect I'll run again till Monday so I'll have plenty of time for me to be "over" this last experience.

thanks for the link!

This is one of the worst allergy seasons on record, due to the mild winter and early warm temperatures. I think that may have something to do with it.

My asthma started in child hood at about 6 disappeared and reoccured at about 33-34 when i was told it was stress due to problems with my boys health i had something like 20 odd years between my childhood attacks and adult ones where i required to use inhalers as well as occational steroid tables or nebuliser. i haven't had a attack in over 2 years and am off all medication maybe giving up smoking had something to do with it and being more relaxed with my kids health. wouldn't hurt yto get checked dude.

could be middleage spread though hippie:ph34r:;)
