Most Memorable Landing Stories

Recommended Posts

What is your most memorable landing? I just read this in another thread:

"I landed on a sheep... it hurts"

I heard another story of a petite woman who landed in a swamp that was over waist high. She struggled with the canopy to the point of nearly leaving it behind. The moral of her story was to stuff the canopy into ones jumpsuit to make it easier to manage. Someone told her about that afterwards.

My most memorable landing was on a wooden stake that was exposed about two feet from the ground. Unfortunately, it was buried about three feet in the ground and it didn't budge when I hit it. I was left with the blackest bruise that I have ever seen in a place that only my gynecologist would ever see. :$

My most memorable landing was my first, on AFF. The radio went out while in free fall so once I was under canopy I was on my own. I kept waiting on them to tell me what to do, but no one ever said anything to me so at 1 grand I started my patern and flew it to perfection, then when I landed I hit pretty hard, rolled and ended up in a heap of human. I stood up brushed my self off and walked back to the hanger. I was not a happy camper, they were asking why didn't you do what we told you? To which I responded I would have loved to but I couldn't hear you.

Landing off after a super hard instant opening that left me with really bad whiplash.

About 100 jumps or so. As I was already messed up and knew I was off, I spotted two well more experienced jumpers than myself (an instructor and a 4way guy) landing in a big "open" field, and I decided to land with them. But as I hit final and was maybe 50 feet off the ground, about 30 huge steer came out from under the treeline and circled us. Pops helped me up and started screaming "Yaw! Yaw!" at them while whipping his canopy toward them... his bright pink canopy. :D I asked him "Does that work?" His response.. "It works in the movies!" :D

Needless to say, we were okay. But certainly my most memorable.

I've had that many out landings during AFF that my most memorable was my first good landing, my 18th i believe. I flew it to perfection landing right on the money. No more than 3 ft from where i wanted to put it down.

As for bad landings...well i landed so far out it was just stupid on one jump. First time jumping in some highish winds and when faced into wind i was falling straight down or backwards at times. Thought i was going in to the road at one point but stood it up and gatherred all my canopy up. Started walking back and i hit this old bridge near the run way that was obviously never used. I went fucking flying across it much to the amusement of Lloyd the vidiot on the plane whosaw me. I was actually lucky not to smash my head and fall in the river :|

Yeah, I guess you could say that was "memorable." That flat out sucked. And I'm really glad you are okay. *Big Hug*

On of the better ones was when I was jumping a round canopy in stiff winds and landed off the airport. I was backing up pretty bad under canopy, and saw that I was going to land in an area with *lots* of cactus. The only place to land without getting hurt was a narrow cow trail.

Soooooooooo, even though I was backing up, I hit the cow trail and stood it up. I was fine but it took quite a while to get the canopy out of the cactus without damaging it.

My most memorable was landing out at the Richmond Boogie this year. We landed in this tiny patch of grass between two country roads where they fork off from eachother. Some lady in a minivan yells: OH MY GOD ARE YOU GUYS ALRIGHT? and we said: "Can we get a ride?"
--- and give them wings so they may fly free forever

A bad spot. A really bad spot. I was last out for a 9-way and didn't have time to look down before diving out after the formation. Sometime while in the formation, I glanced down and really didn't like what I saw....we were over the city. All I could see was trees, powerlines, streets and houses.

When I pulled, the only reasonable out I could see was a field a few miles away. I started flying toward the field hoping to make it. Then we hit the turbulance. This was by far the worst turbulance I have ever felt under canopy. I was getting thrown all over the place. I watched as it spun my friend into linetwists and partially collapsed his canopy. As I got closer to the field it became clear that it was going to be very close. To make it more difficult, there were powerlines I had to cross over to get to the field. I was on my front risers trying to get as much penetration into the wind as possible...I cleared the powerlines by about 5 feet while still on my front risers. Oh shit! Flare! I landed hard, but okay.

I glanced behind me to watch my friend who was trying to make the same field I was disappear behind a row of trees and houses with a last minute low turn. It didn't look good at all. I gathered up my stuff and ran over to the neighborhood, but I had no idea where she actually landed. I spent the next 20 minutes or so wandering around suburbia in my jumpsuit and carrying my canopy asking people washing their cars, kids on bikes, mothers with strollers, etc. if they had seen a skydiver land anywere around there. You should have seen some of the looks I got!

Finally I gave up and found my way back to the dropzone. My friend had already made it back to the dropzone and she was fine...but she had made the most precise landing I have ever heard of in a backyard surrounded by trees, fences, and wooden stakes...and she had about 40 jumps at the time!

Man.. I've got a lot of these stories. It's hard to pick just one.

I once landed in a gun club. When I recieved the airport briefing the fact that the DZ landing area bordered a gun club didn't register. I figured it was a place where people just drank beer and talked about guns.. I didn't think that they were actually shooting them! But I landed just beyond the bunkers. So it was fine. I just got reemed out later. I felt like an ass.

My second AFF jump I landed in a forest with really tall trees. (High winds on a manta.) I crashed through the branches and the canopy got hung up just as I had a tip-toe landing. It was my only stand-up landing in my first 20. :$

And then there was that time that I had some beers while under canopy and forgot to flare... Won't be doing that again!:S:P

I have learned many many many many lessons since I was a silly teenage skydiver.

One I remember was a tandem. My passenger was a big guy about 250 give or take. After opening every thing seem to be ok, turn right turn left and flared ok. Things I always do after opening.Little did I know that the center 3 cells were blown out on the top. Turning in on final we had very little forward speed so we didn't make over the parking lot and landed in the windshield of a car bounced off then landed on the ground.

I think it'd have to be an off landing near the DZ. I picked a long, narrow field that was aligned almost perfectly into the wind. I S-turned to put myself onto final and I had it made. Then noticed people at the far end of the field. Lots of them. At probably 300 feet, I realized they were all running toward where I was about to land. I touched down before they got there, and seconds later found myself surrounded by cheering, screaming kids. They asked all kinds of questions and one kid just stood there yelling "YOU'RE COOL!" over and over. Finally an adult made her way through the crowd and asked if I needed a ride. I said sure and we started walking to her car. I asked what everyone was out there for. "Tractor races" she replied. I didn't know what that meant until we reached the parking lot next to the track. A freaking lawnmower with a number on the side drove by. I couldn't believe there was lawnmower racing going on around the corner from the DZ. A little too close to where I grew up.

On the ride back, I came to the conclusion that skydiving is safer than lawnmower racing.

This past January, we totally misread the uppers. I opened a good 2 miles or so away from the Ranch. No way will I make it back. Find a big backyard, land without a problem. Gathering my stuff, walk towards the front road. Kid, maybe six years old, comes out, with that accusatory voice only a six-year-old boy can have: "Where'd YOU come from?"

I was in no mood...

"Your mom sent me. You didn't clean your room?"

You've never seen a kid run inside and slam the door so quick in your life.
