No Alcohol April - Rules and Guidance

Recommended Posts

Quote

While it's true that eliminating alcohol alone may not contribute to weight loss, there may be some nice ancillary effects that come from eliminating alcohol... drinking (and especially drinking to excess) often leads to higher consumption of food, particularly at times of the day/night when people wouldn't ordinarily eat anything at all (the 1 a.m. run to Denny's or the Waffle House, for example, or "let's order a plate of nachos for the table").

I am much more likely to play more fast and loose with my own rules and food plan if I've already tossed back a few. That's why when I'm really hard-core about health, I also cut way back on the alcohol, not just for the calories in the drinks themselves, but also because of the residual effects.

I can agree with most of what you have stated here. However, I still that that somebody who is so dependent on alcohol that they drink 270 beers in one month's time, would be going crazy without alcohol, so much that they would substitute it with other calories. I think anybody who drinks that much should seriously consider checking into rehab.

I wasn't disagreeing with you about that. I was speaking more about the person who's drinking something less than 270 beers a month, but still drinks on a fairly regular basis. By eliminating those drinks, they may not cut that many calories, but they may also eliminate some excess eating that comes along with excess drinking (we could call it "social food" that you eat outside of your normal eating patterns).

For those people (not the people who are drinking 270 beers in a month) eliminating the alcohol AND the excess food (which is probably not the best food - who goes to Denny's at 2 a.m. and orders a salad? :D) may contribute to weight loss.

10 pounds for anybody to loose must equal a 35,000 calorie deficit in their diet

Yep. Actually, I thought it a little more than 35kcals. But, there are other effects from it, as well, that are ancillary.

Let's say that a person has two beers per day. That's 260 cals. Times 30 is 5,200 in a month. But, add to that that the person maybe avoids the bar and the fried and fatty foods that go with it. Knock off another 600-800 calories.

Also note that alcohol is a central nervous system depressant that slows down the metabolism. No alcohol will allow the body to burn another couple of hundred calories per day by doing nothing.

So there's about a thousand per day.

When you put it that way, that means its a series of events that you are predicting to take place. Other things can happen for instance alcohol can slow the metabolism but coffee can speed it up. Still it makes sense, so I give you that.
If you have a 1000 calorie deficit daily, that will be 2 pounds per week. still not everybody's body can handle 1000 calorie deficit day without catabolism (burning muscle) taking place.

Without some serious steroids, no woman under 150 pounds can have that kind of caloric deficit without loosing muscle.
A guy that is 5'10" weighing 180 pounds, in a light activity day, has a maintenance calorie level of 2433 calories. For him to cut out 1000 calories that would bring him under 1500. Without chemical assistance, most men will have catabolism take place when they go under 1800 calories daily.
The bottom line is that if you are controling your weight with just diet, its relatively easy to do one pound a week. If you want to loose more than that without loosing muscle, say 2 pounds a week then you can ingest 500 calories less than your daily maintain and exercise 500 calories worth daily. The latter is harder than most people think.
To determine your maintain calories you can go here http://www.caloriecontrol.org/calcalsm.html
and to determine how many calories you will loose by different activities. you can go here http://www.caloriecontrol.org/exercalc.html
Still in the end as you can see working hard at it, you probably still will not loose more than 8 pounds in a month. What may happen that if often confused with real fat loss in the beginning, is water loss. When you step on the scale it won't tell you you weigh 3 pounds less today but 2 pounds are coming from your dehydration.

This shouldn't be too hard...I'm in my 5th month of an alcohol-free YEAR!!

Nov 30, 2005 was my last drink*, and I now don't miss it at all. It took a good month to really remove itself from my diet, but I had my first "real" boogie experience in Dublin, and didn't miss it at all.

It can be done...and good luck to those who participate. Personally, it's help me change quite a bit...and now others are noticing too!:)

(*someone put a beer down on the counter of my video room when I was building it out...and after an hour of non-stop work, I reached down and swigged it - only to realize what it was. Made myself so mad...I threw the damn thing away! Only blemish in a spotless 5 month period...)

I went out to a club to see some bluegrass music & have dinner.

Non-alcoholic beer helped (O'Doul's). Doesn't taste quite as good as the real thing, but if you're in a bar to see a band it helps complete the whole bar-going atmosphere, but without the alcohol.B|

I actually stuck with it. Still no booze for me, even with Madame Pope's dispensation. It's weird, but I actually felt super guilty for having started this and then being the first to _publically_ ask for dispensation. So I didn't drink. But I feel great about it now - I actually really wanted one and didn't act on it.

But, breakdowns are expected. I'm sure plenty have broken down, which is fine. Just push it through and celebrate alcohol on Cinqo de Mayo.

Just as an aside - did you find that your tolerance is lower now?

So what were the rules as far as religious ceremonies?

While they weren't completely settled, I believe that for purposes of sacrament that it was argued that this should be allowed.

OK - well i still wasn't going to participate - but just wanted to know how much of a slacker i really was.

Ends up not as bad as some.:D
