Does anyone have access to a Scanning Electron Microscopy?

Recommended Posts

My Ice Cream Scoop just broke and I'd like to get access to one so that I can figure out why so I can prevent it from happening again.

I know how to use one... I just don't have direct access to one at the moment... :$

Yeah I know I'm a dork... :D:D:D

You don't need an electron microscope to figure out if it was a fatigue failure

Geek :D
People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

No... a stereomicroscope or a magnifine glass would probably suffice... but the SEM is much cooler... B| and um... yeah I'm a geek... :$

I suppose a Laser Scanning Microscope (LSM) would work too Ziess Makes a Sweet one that I'm gonna but myself if I ever win the lottery. :D:D:D

I work at a pretty well endowed University. If ya know what I mean, and I think ya do.

If you could devise a more technically complex description of your scoop, exactly what it's function is, and how it will change the course of human history if we scan it. I'm sure I can get permission for a brief look under one of our many obscenely expensive imaging devices.:P

Oh... this I can do. B|:D

As you can see the item in question (a Farberware Ice Cream Scoop {ScoopOverview.jpg}) was approximately 8.5" long initially and fractured at the location where the metal portion of the scoop entered into the plastice handle. The item failed catastrophically while in the process of serving myself a bowl of Ice Cream (a previously mentioned Turtle Treasures Flavor see attached photo...) Prior to serving the ice cream the offending item had been removed from the dishwasher (its possible that this contributed to item failure)

As you can see the fracture surface (ScoopFracture.jpg) has indications of multimode failure (indicated by the two tone nature of the fracture surface.

My suggestion would be to section the part as indicated in Figure3.jpg and then loaded into a SEM (after examination of the surface using a stereomicroscope) to determine the probable mode of failure...

Let me know if I should send it down... :D:D (oh... in case you don't know... don't try to hold the pieces together... its can and probably will destroy the fracture surface :P)

Further evidence of my dorkiness... :D:D:D

btw: I did this for a living for about 2 years... so I do know what I'm doing... :P

Right. This will be very helpful...very helpful indeed.

Was anyone hurt, seriously injured? I hope you notified the authorities.

Anyway. I'll check into this first thing tommorrow. I think the photos will be very convincing.:S:P

I can't help you out with access to an SEM, but since you are clearly a fan of both microscopes and ice cream, I can at least point you to a place where you can buy a necktie inspired by the molecular structure of ice cream: http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/products/stonehenge/benjerry/index.html

In other words, I have nothing relevant to add to the thread, as usual.:)

I'm gonna stick with an internal inquiry... :P but thanks for the suggestion... :D

btw: you probably should also contact Farberware and figure out the metal used to manufacture the Scoop and then do metallographic analysis to confirm that it is in fact the proper material... then generally its a good idea to suggest alternative materials to help prevent this from happening again...

I'm not sure... but I think I've lost my mind... if any of y'all see it wandering around point it back towards OH... :P

If you just run the scoop under some hot water for a bit before scooping up icecream, then your scoops will last longer and not fatigue as easily.

actually I doubt it is actually fatigue failure... as the conditions of the scoops use are not condusive to that type of failure. In all likelyhood it is probably some sort of corrosion which ultimately resulted in an overload failure... but you're right dipping it in some warm water would help reduce the stress on the scoop and reduce the chance of failure...
