livendive 8 #27 May 3, 2006 Quote The final thought that I had was that I'd love to watch the show while having the smell of fish and crab around me. I think the one thing missing is what must be the overpowering smell of seafood. I've yet to watch the show, but I fished up there for a few years. The smell is a far cry from pleasant, but your senses dull to it quickly. Only having time to shower every several days, when your hair and beard are full of dried blood, bait, and fish guts isn't all it's cracked up to be. Also, bait that's turning is particularly noxious, especially squid...kind of an ammonia/urine smell. I really should tune in. My impression of the industry as it currently exists (quotas) is that it's extremely wussified compared to 10-15 years ago. With a lot longer to catch a known quantity of crab/fish, a smaller crew can work steady, get at least a bit of sleep, and make a somewhat more predictable income. They have a real good selection of fish and seafood. Speaking of porterhouse... my wife grilled me a 2" thick porterhouse for my birthday, last week. With a lot longer to catch a known quantity of crab/fish, a smaller crew can work steady, get at least a bit of sleep, and make a somewhat more predictable income. The past couple of years of the show have shown the rally-type crab fishing season, where every boat goes out to catch as many as it can. This season is the start of covering the newer system where certain boats get their quotas. It still looks like it takes cajones... My wife is hotter than your wife. livendive 8 #32 May 3, 2006 Quote The first is that these dudes know how to live. Drown in coffee, light up a cigarette, and don't give a rat's ass about it. A simple life, a hard life, a ballsy life, and enjoy what you can while on board. I forgot to mention... the time on board is almost relaxing and peaceful compared to how we used to party/play ashore. We made skydiver parties seem positively boring by comparison. freeflir29 0 #33 May 4, 2006 I know several people that do now or have been crab fishermen. ALL of them except one no longer fish because they have a debilitating injury. One friend got a 1000 Lb crab pot dropped on him and it smashed some vertebrae. My neighbor which still does the season managed to save enough money to buy his own boat. So he stays in the relatively safe wheel house. I think my job in Iraq is safer!
