Cinco De Mayo, Margaritas

Recommended Posts

2 ounces tequila
1 1/3 ounce Cointreau
2/3 ounce lime juice

Shake with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass. Optional: You can prepare the cocktail glasss by miostening the rim with lime juice, and then dipping it into coarse salt.
-----

Supposedly, this is how to make a REAL Margarita (i'm no coctail expert, I got this off a website about bartending)

The site noted that the lime juice should be freshly squeezed, & the actual recipe seems to be a far cry from the slurpees made with that artificial "mix" that so many people use.

Also, here is how to make a genuine Ernest Hemingway Daiquiri:

1 1/2 oz Light rum
1/4 oz Maraschino liqueur
3/4 oz Lime juice
1/4 oz Grapefruit juice
Mixing instructions:
Shake with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Again, this is very different from the femmy slurpees they serve in so many bars. It is said that Hemingway enjoyed Daiquiris so much that at the end of an evening at the bar, he would get a Daiquiri "to go" by having the bartender put it in a thermos for him.

"I always go with Bacardi or the Captain for rum... "

I surprized!! Your such a fan of tequila and drink only the best when it comes to that, that your tastes should be a bit more refined when it comes to other alcohol...which means that the rum should be...

that is correct sir. when i was was a bartender at pappasito's- tex mex resturant chain in texas- i learned alot. when i learned, that the house frozen rita is basically a powdered mix chock full of artificial sweetners and flavorings. to which they added very cheap tequila and very cheap triple sec. i became an "on the rocks/ top shelf" man from then on. life's to short to drink cheap alchohol.

another good thing i learned- use an orange slice and some sugar when taking a shot of silver (clear) tequila. does great with patron, herradura, or don carlos.

Here's a nice fruitcake to go with your margaritas:

1 cup water
1 cup sugar
4 large eggs
2 cup dried fruit
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup brown sugar
lemon juice
nuts
1 gallon tequila

Instructions
Sample the tequila to check for quality. Take a large bowl. Check the tequila again to be sure that it is of the highest quality.

Pour 1 level cup and drink. Repeat. Turn on the electric mixer; beat 1 cup butter in a large fluffy bowl.

Add 1 teaspoon sugar and beat again. Make sure the tequila is still okay. Cry another tup. Turn off the mixer. Break two legs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit.

Mix on the turner. If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaterers, pry it loose with a drewscriver. Sample the tequila to check for tonsisticity. Next, sift 2 cups of salt. Or something. Who cares. Check the tequila. Now sift the lemon juice and strain your nuts. Add one table. Spoon. Of sugar or something. Whatever you can find.

Grease the oven. Turn the cake tin to 350 degrees. Don't forget to beat off the turner. Throw the bowl out of the window. Check the tequila again. Go to bed. Who the hell likes fruitcake anyway?

MMkay. For rum, the best is supposed to be Appleton VX.

The Original Daiquiri is made with Havana Club Anejo 3 Anos. But I don't know whether we can get that in the USA due to the embargo. (I just don't see the point in the continued embargo against Cuba, but that's probably something for that Other Forum)

Vinny my good buddy,
I have a bottle of Havana Club in my trailer at zhills.
I always pick up a couple bottles when I return from Brasil. They sell for only $10 or so....I like it on the rocks or shots. Next time we get together I will be glad to pour you a few.

As for margaritas, jraf and I have been in el paso for a few days on a project and I have been trying them in every restaurant. I make sure to ask for Patron as the tequila, and make sure they aren't frozen type....the restaurants here make some huge bowl sized drinks....absurd how large they can be. I prefer the classic shaped glass....I would rather drink a few than a huge one that will get watered down. Last nite we had 4 or 5 before we decided to stagger across the bridge to Juarez....but that is another story!!! ;)
