Why do Tevas stink so bad?

Recommended Posts

Damn!!!

I have a freefly coach who wears Tevas while jumping and he decided that they just stink too bad and it was time to get another pair. He took them to the store, put them in a new pair box and bought the new pair while leaving the stinky pair on the shelf in the box for a "nice" surprise for the next customer...that's just wrong:P:D

But really...why do they stink so bad?

I wear Tevas, their shoes in winter and sandals in the summer, and my feet don't stink. Maybe I'm the exception to the "Teva Funk" rule.

Are you in a dry, cold climate? If so, perhaps that's the reason.:S

Carolina weather tends to change quite a bit. As a general rule though it is almost always humid and summers are almost torture. The air is so thick that some days breathing seems like a chore.

Bit of dead skin and sweat build up on them... they just need a good scrubbing every now and then.

Look at the inside of your watch band sometime, if you don't take it off at night... you get the same thing, but to a lesser degree.

When I was diving over at WPB, I sunburned a lot of me.
My feet included.

Wearing Tevas with my peeling feet made it look like I had the worlds worst case of Athletes Feet. Gross to the power of 5.
:D

I went through AFF with a cool person. She eventually lived with one of our instructors at the dz. She said that the one enduring impression of the dz in Florida was everyones dirty feet.

Seb used to sell a fav t-shirt that had a pic of a bunch of peoples feet with the caption "It's 14,000 ft."
That always reminded me and made me laugh.

Pic attached.

i've mentioned this before and didn't get good reactions from it, but i'll say it again, run them through the dishwasher. i know it sounds gross, but it works. the temperatures are high enough for long enough to kill any odor-causing critter. just run them by themselves and there will be NO teva-funk particles left to get on your next load of dishes. on a side note, this is also the best way to clean your toothbrush, but i would recommend not washing both at the same time.

When they had the Super-Connie at WFFC, there were 90 of us on a load. I was in a 4-way with camera going out in the last 10.

We landed wayyyyy out. Two of us saw an open, flat field and went for it. A woman and her daughter picked us up in their truck as we walked out. The field really smelled bad.

"Did you just come out of there?"
"Oh. We just plowed 1.5 tons of pig manure into that field." :o

"Thanks for the ride."
"This is exciting for us. We've never had anyone land this far out."
:D

It took 3 times through the washing machine to get rid of that smell.
:P

bleach will kill stuff, but it won't remove that funky greyish grime that is so tasty to stank emitting organisms. as soon as the bleach breaks down, your friendly foot friends go back to munching on what they love the most and soon you landing gear smells worse than roseanne after a day of wearing leather pants in florida in august. you need to get all of that stuff out of the pores of your sandles and a scrub brush just won't do it. i've tried many techniques and the dishwasher is the only thing i've found that works.

I give mine a good bath at the car wash. I hang them where you hang your mats and give them a good spray.

Great thread!

I have a 14 year old son and his assortment of summer foot wear always ends up smelling really rank. I've tried everything - I guess the dishwasher is the final frontier!

I'm very sensitive to smell and I've actually vomited as a result of this super foul foot odor.

I can't wait to try this!

I've been wearing Tevas for 20+ years now and always threw them in the washing machine with a load of clothes when the stench got too bad. That worked but not as long as I'd like....I think your dishwasher idea is great and will try it out this summer.

Thanks!
