loumeinhart 0 #1 May 2, 2006 old thread but it fizzed pretty fast. Supposedly shadows are not parallel and a coke bottle fell over?? Some claim technology didn't exist then to protect a craft like the LEM from radiation.- - I found this I just don't think something this big could be a hoax. CSpenceFLY 1 #3 May 2, 2006 I would think with todays telescopes you should be able to see the crap they left up there...if it there. .
Guest #4 May 3, 2006 Laser rangefinders left behind by the Apollo missions are still used today. Likewise, the laser rangefinder on the Russian Lunokhod rover still works. mh"The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat."

Guest #9 May 7, 2006 Quotewhat's a laser rangefinder? The laser rangefinders were left by each Apollo mission (though only three of them are working properly, from Apollo missions 11, 15 and 17) as part of the Passive Science Experiments Package, a subset of ALSEP (Apollo Lunar Scientific Experiments Package). It's a very cool array of prisms, which always reflect light directly back where it came from. More common examples of this are reflectors on automobiles and street signs. If for some reason you insist upon "proof" that men from Earth (from my country, the United States of America) walked on the moon, you need look no further than this. However, as I recall, it took several months after Apollo 11 for scientists to successfully hit the reflector left behind by Armstrong and Aldrin, mostly because the astronauts landed some three miles past their intended target in the Sea of Tranquility. Pictures of the laser reflector experiment can be seen here. Simply put, we know that the speed of light, c, is constant. By firing a laser at one of the reflectors and timing how long it takes to come back (compensating, of course, for propagation delays from the supporting electronics and processing), we can measure the EXACT distance that the moon is from the Earth at any given time in its orbital period. Other factors must be taken into account to further accurize the measurement, such as atmospheric distortion (the bending of light as it passes through the air), The position of the moon with respect to the Earth as factored by the time of day (right ascension, declination), the speed of the Earth's rotation, etc. But all that is probably more than you wanted to know. mh"The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." There are 472 kg of rocks in Houston (well, mostly in Houston) that if we didn't go to the moon, someone gots some 'splaining to do. The rocks in Houston predate any rock we find on Earth by about 550 million years. Plus, their chemistry is such that it is hard to impossible to imagine a terrestrial scenario for the petrogensis (that's rock birth). With distortion from the atmosphere even the 10m keck in hawaii doesnt have the resolving power to see it. I seem to remember on one the missions they brought back part of a russian probe so its pretty obvious that it did happen. Unless NASA had more advanced robots in the 70's than they do now!
