I agree she should not have been suspended.

-If the kid was 8, yeah. 16? No no no...not the same thing. :S

And if this statement was accurate, than yes she should have been suspended:

Roach said the student was discussing a grade with her teacher when she began singing the song out loud in class.

A simple Paddling or washing her mouth out with soap would have been just fine!;)

Paddling wouldn't help. -oh wait, yes, paddling WOULD help!! Yes it would solve everything! How does that song go again? :):):):P

(The real problem is that Suspension is the only option teachers now have for discipline and they certainly cant count on the Parents to actually discipline their kids most of the time)

Fuck it - lets give'm the fireing squad!

Detention? That still exists - right?

Well, not that anyone cares what I think but sometimes it depends on timing. What if, for example, the week before another female student in this young ladies' circle was caught trying to bring in a weapon? Or, the girl makes threatening comments under her breath every day and this was the last straw? I have seen examples of both gross exaggeration and too little being done way too late. If a student of mine (and I doubt it would ever really happen and hasn't happened yet) sang that song in my class and I felt it was a threat I wouldn't want to see just a detention. I certainly wouldn't want her to do a detention alone with me in my room after school either. Students and teachers alike should always feel they are in a safe learning environment.
If she had been my student I probably would have just demanded an in class apology and reassurance to all it was just a very bad joke. :S

People need to suck it up. It is not the job of a person to make sure every word he or she says is inoffensive. If you don't want to hear it, don't listen. This is censorship, and is also frankly bullshit. If you can't handle the stress of the job, quit, and be a fucking janitor or something.

Maybe it's because I'm an asshole. Maybe it's because I'm a libertarian. Maybe it's just because I hate people in general, but I think that if you can't handle a children's little frickin' song, maybe you should just lock yourself in a room with nothing to take your mind out of how much of a waste of air you are.

You are entitled to your opinion. However... maybe it's because you haven't been a teacher with a real gun pointed at your face. :P I have. It wasn't fun. :S Neither you nor anyone else will tell me that after convincing said student not to blow me or the student bullying him away, I should be a janitor. I am now officially stepping out of this thread. (I am afraid it may end up in Speaker's Corner.) :o

A suspension really doesn't mean much. Its just a couple days off from school. Just to make sure, I talked to the administration at the school I work at, and generally speaking records of disciplinary action don't get transfered.

Pre-Pussification Era.

Is it a 'Pussified Era'? Very much so. Are today's kids exposed to violence more than ever through the media? Most definitely. Some of them will just sing and talk about it some of them will actually grab daddy's gun and shoot the teacher and some of their class mates along with them. So how are we going to know the difference? Not until you hear shots in the cafeteria? As a teacher myself these things should be nipped in the bud or we will have a few more Columbines to look forward to.:|

I fought the law and the law won. Lesson learned.

I'd've thought that being sent to the principal's office would be appropriate. I'll just bet that the student was innocently humming that just when they were having a disagreement with a teacher that they didn't like.

i used to humm "if i only had a brain" to teachers i disagreed with... most of them were to musically illiterate to get it.. the two that did BOTH sent me to the office... :D i they were also two of the better teachers i encountered in AL public schools when i think about it in retrospect

Aside from being your normal smart arse self Clint, as a teacher of so-called at "risk kids" if a student of mine fronted me with those lyrics, after being criticised by me, they would be out of my program so fast their feet would not touch the floor. I am not by any means a wussy push over type teacher and I've had toe to toe confrontations with quite a few of my more bully minded kids, but to threaten (even jokingly) with a gun is way over the line and would not under any circumstances be tolerated.
I would think this would hold even more weight in the USA given the gun totting history of some students there.

As for detention, without parental permission you can not detain students (at least in Oz) and today parent seem to support teachers less and less, yet expect them to educate, academically socially and morally, while they abdicate their own responsibility.
Not all parents obviously, by there does seem to be an increasing number

Dont fall into the "she's just a kid" mentality, that girl knew exactly what she was doing and she did it on purpose and that is the reason she got suspended.

Expecting people to actually be responsible for their actions and accept the consequences is not fashionable these days.

There will undoubtedly be a million counsellors asking what "root problem" caused this "poor misguided child" to go astray.

Furthermore if she is a member of a special interest group the system will be put in trial for their violation of her rights.

Yes, but on the other hand parents expect me to teach their children how to act appropriately. There is a time and a place for certain things. I just had this discussion with a student who flicked someone off in class and said it didn't hurt anyone. I explained that it is my job to teach him to control his impulses and that there are times when such behavior is inappropriate.

If a kid sang something like that when frustrated with me, I would send her to the principal also.

However....I have been known to burst into song frequently in my class. One of my current favorite songs is to the tune of Joy to the World....
"Joy to the world, my teacher's dead.
I barbequed her head.
I chopped up her whole body,
And flushed it down the potty,
And round and round it goes,
And round and round it goes,
And round and round and round it goes."
