She lays 3 eggs. only 1 hatches 2 days . mama is doing her job. 4 days. other eggs don't hatch . moms on the job. 5 today. nest empty ! find 1 egg broken . just yolk. Find our only one on the ground. Put it back in the nest. No mom. Take the nest inside & feed the little sucker worms ! So far so good !Damn small tho. no feathers just furry & eyes closed.I am NOT being loud. They die every time. And once you touch the nest or eggs, mom doesn't come back. And the egg with just the yolk probably wasn't a fertile egg.Be yourself! airtwardo 7 #3 May 12, 2006 Got a smarter mama at our place! A week and change back, I spy Mrs. Cardinal on her eggs (3) in a nest behind a toolbox on a work bench in the garage...All 3 hatched...and she had me 'trained' to leave the garage door open with the light on so she could get plenty of bugs for groceries. The whole family split two days ago... We must have 20 redbirds hanging around these days ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~

McDuck 0 #10 May 12, 2006 That's pretty darn cool of you to take care of that Cardinal. I had a formula for food that I used when I raised a magpie that had fallen out of a nest near my house in WA, and it sure made the little guy grow FAST. It was a blended mixture of oatmeal, hard-boiled egg, beef-heart and milk. I mixed it in a blender until it had the consistency of wet paste, and then I would use a pair of tweezers to feed it globs of the stuff. This was only until he was old enough for me to start buying grubs and worms to place under leaves and such. Then I would put him on the ground and flick the leaves with my finger to expose the grubs so he could see how to find food. I had to feed the grubs to him a few times before he understood that he could find and eat the bugs himsef. Good luck on raising the little critter. Remember, you're not raising him/her to be part of YOUR species, you're raising it to be a part IT'S OWN species.
