What is with everyone's self-esteem these days??? Why are there so many threads needing reassurance that people like which of the above physical and/or personality traits you are?

Let's face it - there are some quirks that we find amusing and interesting. There are other quirks that we find annoying. I like some quirks and I hate other quirks. Self-doubt is a quirk that can be cute if exercised occasionally. Gloominess and a consistently negative self-image is extremely annoying, unless justified (and let's face it - some of us, like me, can have damned good reasons to have a negative self-image).

Low self-esteem can lead to two things: 1) an effort to cure the self-esteem issues; or 2) doing nothing and feeling even worse about it.

I have a number of things I don't like about myself. I have way less now than even a couple of years ago because I'm constantly seeking self-improvement. Those things that we don't like about ourselves are those things that we seek to improve about ourselves.

The instant we are totally happy with ourselves is the instant we start a downhill slide. We've got weight-loss threads, where people who are concerned about their "junk in the trunk" seek to get rid of it. That's a positive.

There's nothing wrong with low self-esteem, so long as it is accompanied by affirmative action to cure the reason for it.

I will respectfully disagree.

I think you can be happy with yourself and still work on improving yourself. The two are not mutually exclusive.

I'm not referring to those asking for great ideas/tips for improvement. I'm referring to those "phishing" for compliments b/c they obviously have a need for that to be happy with themselves.

Well, I have a problem with those people. I've found that I usually am not asked for these things by a person more than a couple of times, for I will be completely honest. (It's why my twin sister used to take me shopping with her - I'd tell her if something looked stupid).

Honesty helps me a lot.
