A used car salesman called me a liar!

Recommended Posts

This "haggling" when buying a car from a dealer thing has been around as long as I can remember, (and I'm not young.) I remember my father being good at haggling with car dealers, and I even did it well when I bought a new car many years ago.

People wanting to buy a car, and who are not good at confrontation and haggling, are apparantly sheep among wolves. I have never heard of a "good deal" (from the start of negotiations) from a car dealer.

I guess that it why Saturn decided to create a new paradigm on purchasing cars, i.e., "no haggle".

It's a shame. The industry seems to want to perpetuate their reputation as those who need to be treated with suspicion.

After all, cars are a "commodity" item aren't they?!!! Why wouldn't dealers want to advertise good prices and stick with them?

One quote I was told long ago by my Father in Law, and like is "What do Car dealers and Sperm have in Common?? They each have about a one in a million chance of becoming human beings".

My brother in Law and Father in Law are car dealers and they are really good people and actually understand why people dislike car dealers. The industry has created the situation with all of the hidden front-end, back-end and hidden information and costs. But I agree that it has become a game of who knows more and how can you win the fight in the negotiation...I just bought a new Acura TL (Haven't told Dad yet as he sells Chryslers!) and got a good deal, but I was prepared to haggle. Started out at $34.7K and sold for $31.4K. He made money and I was happy, but why did it take 3 hours to get to that point? I am in sales (Capital Manufacturing Equipment), and when my customer asks for my best price, he gives me one shot before he decides...why do car dealers think they get 5 or 6 tries at their best offer?

5-6 tries? Hell I was going at it for 4 days over this one vehicle. It was such a pain in the ass. The worst car deal ever and I had nothing to show for it because I walked out after I seen thenumbers being played with.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!

It simple. Enough car buyers are either uninformed, trying to buy more car than they can afford, or have poor credit that the dealers can get away with whatever they want.

Screwing with terms and % on loans, moving money around a trade-in, adding extras you don't need or want, or whatever else they can come up with, thats the way they train their sales people. On the off chance that an informed, qualified customer comes along, they give it the old college try, and try to work them over as well.

I took a 3 yr old car in to maybe trade for something with better gas milage. I needed to knwo what they give me in trade, to see how far it would be from the buyout on the loan. I was willing to loose $1000 or $1500 on the deal, but if it was more than that, I'd sell the car myself.

Anyway, I went to the local dealership, told the guy my story, and asked for an appraisal. He told me they wouldn't give me an appraisal until I signed an order to buy a new car. I asked for the manager, who told me the same thing. I exlpained again, I wasn;t sure if I would trade or sell privately, and If I sold privately, I wouldn't be ready to buy unitl the car sold.

They held their position, so I went home, called another dealer 30 min away, went there that night, got the appraisal, and bought a car on the spot.

I actually worked as a car salesman for 6 weeks. I went through the training, saw the process, sold a few cars, and then quit and found a job where people didn't hate me unitl after I screwed them over.

I am more appalled that you agreed to aloan with 8.75% interest. You need a credit union, man.

Way to rain on his parade, Terminator:|

And it doesn't take a credit union, "man", as I received your same rate (OK, so it was 5%) on my preowned Sequoia I recently purchased. (P.S. I LOVE it).

Like, oh my gosh, I hope you're not, like, going to try out for "America's Next Financial Advisor" or something.

You're good for a little bit, aren't you?

:P

That was the lamest insult I have received today. Please try again. I don't want my faith in you to be crushed upon the rocks of disappointment. I already lost my soul there years ago. Faith is all I have.

:)
Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

Name a better one you received!

I will believe it when I see it.

I am the Master of Disaster, baby:P

Qualifying as the lamest does not preclude it from also being the best. When the number of insults received is low, being best of the day is not exactly difficult.

A used car salesman calling someone else a liar has got to have shattered some irony meters somewhere. :)

Having sold cars for a year I can tell you that the BS goes both ways. People bringing in their old cars and lying about the condition they are in or how well they took care of them. Sawdust in the transmission to cover up the fact it's slipping, sealant in the engine so you can't hear those valves tapping, steam cleaned engines so you can't see how badly the head gaskets are leaking oil etc. People who waste hours of your time on a busy Saturday when they know they have really bad credit and couldn't get financing for a postage stamp and have been told that by the last 10 dealers they have visited. Disconnected odometers etc...

I know it's hard to understand by people who are basically honest and wouldn't do any of these things, but the dealer has no way of knowing that. Often, whoever gets the better of the deal is usually the better bullshitter.
