Newbie 0 #1 May 18, 2006 Anyone ever shot a gun underwater? Do they work? What happens to the bullet? Just curious really. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
ChrisL 2 #2 May 18, 2006 some do, some dont. The bullet slows down rapidly and stops and sinks to the bottom. Point blank it can still kill, but the effective range is a teeny fraction os what it is in air__ My mighty steed
Icon134 0 #3 May 18, 2006 There was a Mythbusters episode on this very topic... they seemed to have problems with some of them just under the water.Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
Vertifly 0 #4 May 18, 2006 yes, if the bolt action is fast enough underwater. the combusion of a bullet happens below the surface of the metal of the bullet. underneath the bullet basically. if anything hits the bullet hard enough, it will go.

EDYDO 0 #8 May 18, 2006 I have shot bullets underwater many times with my powerhead. I just paint the case to keep water out and never had a failure to fire. So, as has been said, if the hammer hits hard enough, it will fire. Ed
kelpdiver 2 #9 May 18, 2006 the results were fairly similar - high speed rifle rounds disintigrate. Iirc, the shotgun underwater damaged itself.

Can't help but wonder if they tested with a breech loaded, rather than a semi.Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard. MagicGuy 0 #11 May 18, 2006 Glock pistols can shoot underwater. It's not recommended, but they will function while submerged. The Mythbusters episode was really interesting. I couldn't believe that just 3 feet into the water the bullet shattered into a thousand pieces. I thought for sure you would be dead.
kelpdiver 2 #12 May 19, 2006 > Can't help but wonder if they tested with a breech loaded, rather than a semi. it was the standard 200-300$ pump action 12 gauge. It's one they already had, and it's the most common type.
FlyingJarhead 0 #13 May 19, 2006 Koleshnikov 47 VS the M4A1 Carbine both guns were fully submerged in water, and thick mud, the AK 47 still fired (accuratley) and the M4 jammed. AK=more reliable and more accurate on the first 3 shot burst m4=accurate and ehh reliability

While it "may" be the the one they already had and the most common type; they should have tested a gas-operated semi like the Remington 1100 also. They might have achieved different results.Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.
