lawrocket 3 #1 May 19, 2006 Is there a worse place to take kids in temrs of health prospects? Those places have gotta be vector central. Not only do you have the standard animal diseases and other things that come with the general filth associated with dirty creatures who sleep in their own excrement, but you also have dirty hands from every other person out there leaving whatever microbes they may personally have on the animals to be freely transferred to other kids, people, I can't imagine ever taking my kid to a petting zoo until he's about 7, and ensuring that he takes a bath in a mixture of Comet, isopropyl alcohol and gasoline. We had a lawsuit filed here in Fresno abotu a 2 year old who was in the hospital for four months after visiting a petting zoo. My thoughts were, thinking of the voice of Sam Kinison, "IT WAS A PETTING ZOO! WHAT DID YOU EXPECT? THE CLEAN ROOM AT LAWRENCE LIVERMORE????" Can anyone tell me why you'd take a kid to a petting zoo? turtlespeed 226 #3 May 19, 2006 besides that the petting zoo makes them happy - or that it is fun to watch thier eyes light up when they get to actually touch an animal that they normally don't get to, or the sound of the elated squeals from petting those animals, no - Can't think of a reason at all.I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
waltappel 1 #4 May 19, 2006 QuoteQuote Can anyone tell me why you'd take a kid to a petting zoo? because handwashing is not difficult? I know you're being a wiseass, but you have an excellent point. As a nurse, I was going through an orientation program for new hires at the retard farm, and volunteered for one of their favorite demonstrations to new employees. They had me wash my hands and then did cultures of my hands. It was normally a great way to show how poorly most people's handwashing technique was because generally the next day, the petri dish would be full of nasty stuff. They were quite surprised when they weren't able to culture anything from my hands, though. I had washed them thoroughly and, on the way back to the training room, used a clean paper towel to open the doors. Good handwashing is highly effective. skymama 37 #9 May 19, 2006 I took my kids to a lot of petting zoos, including organized school outings to the zoos, when they were young and they loved them. This was about 10 years ago and E Coli was never mentioned and wasn't considered a threat. Of course we had them wash their hands when they were done. They never got sick from going. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

lawrocket 3 #11 May 19, 2006 I loved them, too. for a couple of minutes. But it's also why I put a limiting factor in the post of age 7. My son is a couple of months from being two. His hands are always going to his mouth, and it's a heckuva task to keep his hands clean. I think his immune system should be built up. As I implicated, I don't have a problem with bringing older children to a petting zoo. But this guy (a former local news anchor) brought his two year-old girl to the petting zoo at the fair, and is suing because of a "failure to post wanrings." My thought is, the guy's a dumb ass. No, I don't blame the petting zoo owner, the fair, the city or the county for it. I just don't think that a petting zoo is really an appropriate place for a person who really has no concept of personal hygiene or self-control. I'm a doting dad, and I know that it is simply impossible to keep a toddler clean, and thus I ensure that he stays out of places where it seems a risk would be highly elevated. At least he leaves the toilet water alone now. My wife is hotter than your wife.

karenmeal 0 #17 May 19, 2006 Well, I understand your concerns about a two-year old who puts their hands in their mouth. But I think waiting till age 7 could be a bit excessive. With some close supervision I would think a 3-4 year old would be fine. (And I used to work at a daycare with that age group.) Life is full of risks and you can't sanitize his every activity. JohnRich 4 #25 May 19, 2006 QuoteI just don't think that a petting zoo is really an appropriate place for a person who really has no concept of personal hygiene or self-control. A good petting zoo will have an attendent who stays on top of cleaning up the excrement. The one to which I take my granddaughters will actually place the scoop underneath the animal while they're doing it, so that it never even touches the ground upon which you are walking. No, I don't want that job. And they also have a handwash station outside the exit, so you can clean up immediately afterwards.
